Another Invasive Specie Fish Caught in the Catawba

Back in May an angler caught and released a Northern Snakehead while fishing in the Catawba River and now reports are out that a Piranha has been caught. This time the angler kept the toothy crappie shaped fish and turned it over to North Carolina Wildlife Commission. Officer Norwood of the NWC agreed with angler Jerry Melton that the fish did appear to be a Piranha probably dumped after getting to big for someone’s home aquarium.
Invasive species pose a serious threat to many of our native wildlife & habitat. I can’t understand why people would dump any creature be it a cat or dog or some invasive specie like a Northern Snakehead into our woodlands or waterway thinking that is humane way to dispose of unwanted pets. If we are not diligent we could have the next “kudzu invasion” that could impact our water ways with the large variety of invasive water based species we face.
