He Messed With the Wrong 5 Year Old

    Jul 05, 2007 @ 11:43 pm by Moose

A young North Carolina boy is being praised for his actions to protect 7 other children from a rabid fox attack. Rayshun McDowell was out in his Cleveland County yard playing with other children when the fox attacked.

“He snuck up on my leg and then he bit me … I choked him. I kicked him. I knocked him down. I pushed him down. He got back up and he scratched me,” Rayshun said.
Rayshun pinned the fox for more than a minute until his stepfather could help him. He kicked the fox away from Rayshun.
The fox attacked while the family was having a cookout.
Rayshun’s mother, Shinda Linder, said, “If he hadn’t held the fox down, then it was like seven other kids out here that could have gotten bit. So, I think he was very courageous for holding it down while the other kids ran into the house.”
A neighbor shot the rabid fox three times with a handgun, but it continued to try to attack until Rayshun’s stepfather hit it in the head with a stick.
Cleveland County Animal Control confirmed Tuesday that the fox was rabid.

Rayshun is being given injections to prevent infection with the rabies virus.

There seems to be a fair amount of reports of rabies cases across the state so people should take precautions. Rayshun is lucky he wasn’t more severely injured but it sounds like his actions prevented others from being hurt. Here is a link to an interview that he did that MSNBC has up for now that you may want to check out. I know some grown men that are a lot less brave then this young man especially when it comes to snakes but that is another story.

    1. Sounds like a pretty quick thinking kid. Brave, too. It stinks that he will have to have rabies shots though. From what I’ve heard, those hurt.

I’d have to agree with you about the snake thing. Don’t like snakes, don’t want to be anywhere near them.
