Dick Hamilton Executive Director Forced Out by NC Wildlife Commission

August 9, 2007

AP is reporting that in an interview with Richard Hamilton that he reports that he gave his resignation after being told in a Special Closed Door Session of the Wildlife Commission that they had lost confidence in his ability to manage the staff.

At question is one of Dick’s Staff members Joan Troy, liaison with the N.C. legislature and legal specialist.

Joan Troy, the commission’s legislative liaison, told The News & Observer of Raleigh that commissioners resented her influence and that led to Hamilton’s resignation. Troy, 47, said she didn’t fit in on the all-male, 18-member commission.
“I’m a non-hunter, non-fisher, non-biologist, non-male,” she told the newspaper. “I was never going to be accepted no matter how hard I tried.”
Troy said the special session had been called to oust her.
In a news release issued Monday afternoon, the commission said they “will hear a report on the results of a comprehensive review of the agency’s legal specialist position.”
Commission chairman Wes Seegars, of Goldsboro, confirmed that Troy’s official title is legal specialist.

Well this is what happens when politics and wildlife management meet. It’s unclear what all will shake out from this but one thing is for sure there is still a deep divide between the biologists & staff that does the day to day work and those appointed by the Governor who make up the commission. Dick Hamilton served the citizens of this state for 37 years and has the respect of many outdoorsmen who enjoy the bounty from the woods & water this state provides. I’ll update as information warrants.
