Almost Up To His Neck In Mud
Donald Meeks from Durham NC found himself mired in mud after falling into a “quick sand” type mud hole while bow fishing for carp on Falls Lake. The severe drought has left water levels at the lake extremely low making it possible to access parts of the lake not normally accessible by foot. That is what the 68 year old Meeks was doing when he stepped into a mud hole sinking to his chest and unable to escape. David Minshew a longtime friend had rode with Mr. Meeks out to the lake and waited for him at the car. When Mr Meeks did not return by dark a 911 call was placed and Durham County Deputies began a search for Mr. Meeks. Around midnight the NC Highway Patrol responded with a helicopter and around 2am with the aid of thermal imaging equipment the Highway Patrol Helicopter Crew located Donald Meeks.
He was surrounded by tall grass and “buried up to his chest in some mud, quicksand-type matter,” Andrews said.
Deputies were unable to pull Meeks out using a rope. They created a walkway with plywood and used some “elbow grease” and finally freed Meeks about two hours later, Andrews said.
Meeks says he was simply walking when he fell in a hole, and that he began hallucinating while he was cold and wet and stuck in the mud.
“I thought about being in my warm bed and not out here shivering,” he said. “I asked Jesus what in the world I had done to deserve this.”
Mr Meeks is certainly a lucky man I’m sure that the above normal temperatures aided in his surviving this ordeal. Once again the importance of having someone who knows where you are at and can sound the alarm when you go missing is extremely important. Lastly and most importantly never underestimate the power of a prayer and what God can do.
