Update On Missing North Carolina Hikers

November 13, 2007

The Bryant’s went missing almost 3 weeks ago while hiking in Pisgah National Forest and just reported missing last week. The search has been suspended but not before an unidentified body was found in the woods near the missing couple’s parked car. Waiting on autopsy results as well as and identification of the body from the North Carolina State Medical Examiners Office the FBI took over the case because it was discovered in a National Forest. This afternoon the Medical Examiners Office has stated that the still unidentified body was that of a female and the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the back of her head.

Additionally Tennessee authorities have reported that one of the Bryant’s ATM cards was used in Ducktown Tn to withdraw $300 from their account 2 days after they went missing. Surveillance video from the drive up ATM shows an individual on foot and in a raincoat believed to belong to the Bryant’s.

This news is certainly disturbing and would strongly suggest that the Bryant’s maybe victims of a crime even though authorities have not said as much. A hotline has been established and anyone with information on the Bryant’s and this case are urged to call 828-862-3645.

Crimes in National Parks and National Wilderness areas certainly seem to be a significant issue that must be addressed. Many of us enjoy the opportunity to explore the wilderness and nature around us but for a small few it is a place to find victims and to commit crimes. I certainly hope that the Bryant’s are ok but with the amount of time that has past that happy outcome seems like a tall order at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jon & Irene Bryant, their family & friends, and all those working to find out what has happened to this couple.

That’s a terrible thought. It would be bad enough if they had an accident. If they were attacked and robbed and killed, somehow that just makes it worse. I guess you just think you are safer in the wilderness. Apparently that isn’t always the case.
