Ohio Hunter Saves Another Hunter’s Life
Do you know what to do in an emergency? For some of us it may be years since we have taken a first aid or CPR class and that is usually the last thing we are thinking about when we hit the woods. In Ohio earlier this month a hunting accident nearly claimed Michael Kane’s life when he accidentally severed his femoral artery while field dressing a deer. Michael called his father on his cell phone who in turn alerted the rescue squad and raced to his son’s aid. All this effort would be for not because of the severity of the injury in all likelihood Michael would have bled to death before any of them arrived except for a nearby hunter that heard Michael’s cries for help.
Ryan Price was hunting about 600 yards away when he heard those cries for help and he came to Michael’s aid. Surgeons credit Mr. Price with saving Michael’s life by cutting up his hunting shirt and making a tourniquet to control the blood loss. This is truly and amazing story and you should check out the Toledo Blade that has a much more detail account.
As someone who was an EMT and worked rescue for a number of years I can tell you this could have easily had a tragic ending. I think everyone should have First Aid and CPR training because you never know when the need will arise it could be for a stranger, could be for yourself or even for a loved one. The Red Cross and the American Heart Association offer classes and for a few hours of your time you can learn the knowledge you need to save a life.

That’s a pretty amazing story. I’ve had First Aid and CPR training but never been called upon to use it. I’m generally pretty good in a crisis, so I like to think I’d know what to do.
