Weekend Waterfowl Hunt was a Blast
With the 2007-2008 waterfowl season winding down here in North Carolina and opportunity to hunt in Orange County I jumped on it. The farm pond we hunted was the same one where I killed a banded goose just before Christmas. This morning there was five of us hunting the temperatures had dropped a bit but the 47’ was still a bit warm for my liking. There was no ice this week for us to contend with so getting set up was a lot easier. I slid my bucket seat back against the cedars to breakup my outline and put my face mask on to further conceal me. The five of us were spread along the shoreline hidden in the brush anticipating the flights we would see this day.
As the eastern sky began to lighten the first duck buzzed our decoy spread still to early for legal shooting light but a good sign. Almost as soon as legal shooting light arrived so did the birds. It was great to watch them circling the decoys and to hear the music of the calls as we tried to lure them into gun range. We had some great shooting as the ducks began to drop in towards the decoys, a significant number of them safely landed off to our right but once another flock buzzed the decoys the volley of shots put them all up in the air. I bet we had more then 20 birds circling at one time and it was easy to forget to pick out one bird when you went up to shoot instead of shooting at the flock.
We had a spectacular day all the ducks we took were ring bills. Unfortunately the geese never did show up and I guess that’s why they call it a wild goose chase. Even after the others have called it a day Rick and I hunt a few hours more but the geese flocks pass over to high and pay no mind to our calling and decoy spread.

You may find that bow and arrow hunting could add a whole new aspect to your hunting that you never expected before you tried, whether it’s to put yourself in the shoes of an older culture or just to give the game a better chance. The same can be done with fishing, by relying on old techniques rather than the newest fishing technologies out there.
