Spring Deer Hunt Would Ya Do It?

Kind of a tough question especially when you have does close to dropping fawns but that is exactly what is being contemplated in Minnesota.

Department of Natural Resources officials will decide this week whether the unprecedented hunt will be used to help “depopulate” deer herds where a cattle disease has broken out.
“Our mission is to get bovine TB out of the deer herd up here,” said Paul Telander, northwest regional wildlife manager.
DNR officials last week stepped up their efforts to kill deer in northwestern Minnesota where an outbreak of bovine tuberculosis in cattle and deer was discovered in 2005. Aerial shooters in a helicopter killed 110 whitetails in the core 164-square-mile area around Skime, in Roseau County. The aerial shooting began Monday, and was the first time the DNR had used a helicopter to increase the deer kill.

Eating deer that are infected with bovine TB are reported to be relatively safe to eat. Myself I’m not sure I would eat it considering that cattle that have the disease are removed before hitting the food supply. I understand to stop the spread of this disease that much of the herd has to be removed. I’m not sure I’d want to field dress many does with fawns close to full term. My hats off to hunters that can help them in this tough endeavor I’m not sure I could if the expectation is for hunters to use the meat.

  2. I could hunt deer until March 31 in closeby Fairfax County, VA but have never done it later than mid-February and only once that late. However, if the urban archery season were instituted in my county, and I could just go on a casual deer hunt or two close to home in March I’d probably do it.
