July 1, 2008

WRAL

Sad news we learned today that Wildlife Officer Eddie Vaughn died Monday evening after losing control of his motorcycle in Vance County he crossed the center line hitting an on coming car. Officer Vaughn patrolled Vance County and was well known and liked by the outdoorsmen from that area. He was 38 years old. Although I did not know him personally I had the honor of meeting him on a couple of occasions.

Eddie Vaughan, game warden with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission in Vance County, died Monday night in a motorcycle accident, according to reports from the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Trooper B.C. Edwards confirmed the details of the accident around 12:45 a.m. today.

Vaughan, 38, was operating a 2004 Harley-Davidson on Allison Cooper Road about one mile south of U.S. 1 when the accident occurred at 8:10 p.m.

He was traveling south when the motorcycle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a car driven by Mollie Bullock.

Vaughan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Dispatch

On NC Hunt & Fish was where I first heard about this tragedy and there has been many condolences offered by the outdoor community here in North Carolina. Some of the members of the board have hunted with Eddie and there is one that was related to him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends who struggle with this loss.

My father, Ret. First Sgt. Paul K. Linder, was the training officer for Eddie. I too heard the information from the news. My father was not in NC at the time and I was the first to tell him. My father returned on Tuesday afternoon and called me immediately after he recieved my message. He is very saddened to know that such a great and upstanding man lost his life in an accident. Not only was the accident a tradgedy, but to lose such a great man.

I had the pleasure of knowing Eddie through his brother. I can say from first hand knowledge that he was one of the most likable guys you would ever meet. I once went catfishing with Eddie on probably the coldest day of the year. We built a fire next to the lake and cooked the best venison steak I have ever eaten. We only caught a couple of fish that day, but they were huge. It was simply one of the best fishing trips I have been on. He will be sorely missed. Eddie is certainly in a better place, but please pray for his family that they might find peace.

I had the privilege of attending Northern Durham High School with Eddie and remember him as an outstanding individual with an awesome work ethic. My prayers go out to his family as well as his brethren with the NCWRC.

I grew up with Eddie and rode the bus to school every day with him. He was great guy and a wonderful outdoorsman. He hunted fair chase with a bow only. My brother Cliff hunted with him. We will miss him.
