Tragic End To Deer Season In Western North Carolina
December 14, 2008

Deer season ended Saturday in Western North Carolina on a tragic note when a young hunter shot a man hiking in Pisgah National Forest. The unidentified man was dead by the time authorities arrived on the scene. At this time authorities are looking at this as a hunting accident.
A Hispanic male was shot before 1 p.m. Saturday near the county line in Pisgah National Forest, according to the Transylvania County Sheriff’s office. A cell phone call from the area was made to the Henderson County’s Sheriff’s office, which called the Transylvania County Sheriff’s office.
“At this point in the investigation, it appears to be a tragic hunting accident,” said Sheriff David A. Mahoney of Transylvania County.
Transylvania County and Henderson County sheriff’s offices both responded to the incident. The victim was dead when they arrived. The identity of the victim was withheld pending notification of his next of kin. The victim was not a hunter and was not wearing protective hunting attire. Mahoney added he was not of the county and they “having a logistical issue trying to find out who he is exactly and where his next of kin are.”
“We are trying to look at some possibilities and firm up why exactly he was in that area,” said Mahoney.
The shooter was a hunter, who Mahoney said was “less than 20.” The hunter was with a group at the time of the shooting. The hunter had a hunting license and was on U.S. Forest Service land.

Once again it would appear that failure to properly identify one’s target is the rule that was broken and the cost was the loss of life as well as someone having to live with the knowledge that his carelessness took another.
