Safety Focus of This Week’s Show

    Oct 02, 2008 @ 11:42 pm by Moose

On Moose Droppings the Radio Show this week we’ll spend a lot of time talking safety especially treestand safety. There has been 4 accidents already in North Carolina involving treestands two the hunters lost their lives and the other two resulted in serious injuries. The use of a safety harness is of paramount importance. Also talk a little about the short duck season and the impact gas prices are having on hunting. I actually passed on the opening of duck season the main reason being the cost of gas. The other topic we’ll cover is the new sponsor “Sportsman Gear Daily” on the Skinny Moose Network. Interesting business model offering sportsmen a different name brand product at a rock bottom price each day but you have to act fast before it is gone. “Gear Today Gone Tomorrow” As you can see we pack a lot into a 30 minute show so check it out.

    A Day of Remembrance

    Sep 19, 2008 @ 10:43 am by Moose

There won’t be a radio show this week because of my schedule the last few days. As I posted before my friend Darlene Wyrick passed away unexpectedly this week and in addition my wife’s Uncle Woodrow also died this week.

    Mr. James Woodrow Adams
    September 17, 2008

Godwin, NC: Mr. James Woodrow Adams, age 84, of 6175 Bluman Road died Wednesday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Funeral Services will be at 3:00 PM Friday at Stone’s Creek Advent Christian Church in Benson. Officiating will be Rev. Doug Abel. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Mr. Adams was born February 14, 1924 in Johnston County to the late John Quincy and Mancy Lee Adams. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Pinkney Adams. Mr. Adams was a farmer and a volunteer fireman with the Godwin-Falcon Fire Department. He served in the U. S. Army Infantry during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Banner Post 109. Mr. Adams was a member of Stone’s Creek Advent Christian Church where he served as a deacon and an elder.

Mr. Woodrow was a great man, loved to fish and always talked to me about my latest hunting adventure. A number of years ago I brought BBQ Goose to the family gathering and he absolutely loved it. From that day on just about every time he saw me he asked me when I was going to bring him some more. I killed some on opening day and froze them with the plan to cook him some when he got out of the hospital. Mr. Woodrow will be missed and whenever I cook geese I’ll have fond memories of him. In honor of him here is my goose recipe.

My recipe for Apple Hickory BBQ Goose
First off we do not pluck the geese we skin and breast the meat out as a boneless cut. Geese come in a wide variety of sizes so you’ll have to adjust cooking times to the size of the geese you have.
Take the boneless skinless goose breasts and put them in a roasting pan with about ¼ inch of apple cider vinegar in the bottom of the pan. Then cover the tops of the skinless goose with strips of bacon. Put the goose in a pre heated oven (375) and let cook till done but not overly down. For me this is usually about 45 minutes (internal temp of 165’f)
    BBQ Sauce
    Jar of Apple Jelly
    Bottle of Hickory BBQ Sauce
½ cup of Apple cider vinegar
Mix all together in saucepan heat slowly stirring often till all the jelly is melted and everything blends together.
Take cooked goose out of oven drain off greases remove bacon and discard. You’ll still have small amount of grease in the pan but that’s fine you just want to dump the majority out. Allow the goose to rest for about 15 minutes and to begin to cool so it is easier to slice. Then slice it up like a roast and then return the slices to the roasting pan. Pour the BBQ sauce over the meat cover the pan with tin foil and return to the oven. Turn the oven down to 300 and leave it in for an hour. I’ve served this and people swear its beef roast or deer roast. No one guesses its Canadian goose.

Radio Show will return next week

    On My Way To Maine

    Aug 21, 2008 @ 11:53 pm by Moose

Well the last few days have been crazy as I get ready to head north for “God’s Country” and a little bear hunting. Needless to say my plan to put a radio show together has been shot to heck so I’m sorry there won’t be a show this week. I’ll have the equipment with me on this trip if I can get acess to high speed internet to do a show next week from the road.

My intention was to use my Mossberg 500 12 gauge with a slug barrel and the new Remington Core Loct sabot slugs but that won’t be happening. I was unable to get it sighted in so after shooting two boxes of shells and developing a sore shoulder I’m opting for my ‘06 instead. I need to invest in a bore sighter for sure.

Well I have a 20 some odd hour road trip ahead of me which should be fun except for that Jersey NYC streatch. Updates on the blog will depend on internet access.

    Computer Woes

    Aug 01, 2008 @ 12:06 am by Moose

No radio show this week but hopefully I’ll have everything up and running by next week. Computer has been acting up and I think part of it is the amount of digital images I have. They take a lot of space and the memory get filled up quick. I purchased an external hard drive and have begun the long down load process. Well over 200 minutes to download and then I’ll delete them off my computer hard drive. A bit nerve racking when your a photo bug like I am. Speaking of that check out my wildlife photography blog Moose’s Wild America. I’m currently featuring photos I shot in Alaska a few years back.

Tundra Swan Hunting & Conman’s Guide Service On this Week’s Show

    Jan 25, 2008 @ 08:21 am by Moose

Tune in today to my radio show at 1pm to hear about my Tundra Swan hunting adventures as well about Conman’s Guide Service. Mike and Connie run the guide business on the shores of lake phelps in Washington County. This was my third tundra swan hunt with them and it was a great time. In addition to the Tundra Swan they have bear, deer, turkey, and small game as well as access to the lake that has some phenomenal fishing. I’ve personally hunted deer, swan, turkey and rabbits with them and have never been disappointed. They provide quality service as well as some very nice accommodation’s that they refer to as “cottages” but feel more like home.
So join me for this week’s show.

What’s the Difference Between A Bird and An Arrow? They Both Got Feathers

    Jan 10, 2008 @ 02:44 am by Moose

On the Sunday Hunting debate a lot if the proposal to allow Falconry Hunting on Sundays passes. Last night I attended district 5 public meeting about wildlife proposals for the coming year. One of them is to open up Sunday hunting for falconry which according to NCWRC is not covered under the Sunday Hunting ban in the State Statues. I already knew this because I’ve debated the Sunday Hunting Issue on numerous occasions and for the record I’m opposed to changing the law. Now my opposition is somewhat mild in the sense that I’m not going out of my way to prevent the law from being changed nor am I voting for individuals based on their views on this subject.

As fate would have it I was sitting next to one of the pro supporters who was on the local TV news with me a while back. We’re friends and have even hunted a time or two together and talk on line some. The question in the open part of the hearing came up about how come falconry could be allowed but Sunday Hunting in general could not be allowed. The spokesman for the Wildlife Commission said that the law in question was passed in 1869 and it did not address hunting with falcons which means the Wildlife Commission has the authority to open up Sundays for this type of hunting. I then specifically asked if the law addressed archery or not. The spokesman said no it only banned the use of firearms to hunt with on Sunday’s. This means that it is within the NCWRC authority to open up bow hunting on Sundays just as it is for them to open up falconry.
I find it interesting that every year they dodge the Sunday hunting ban by saying it requires the law makers to change the law when in actuality they could open it up to archers. Once this information was realized by many in the room there was a flurry of folks going on the record urging them to bring this proposal up as soon as possible.

You can hear the recording I made of this exchange on my radio show this week, Moose Droppings Fridays at 1 pm.

    Waterfowl Hunting This Past Weekend

    Jan 08, 2008 @ 12:42 am by Moose

Saturday morning was the third morning in a row where the mercury was below freezing the other days it didn’t matter but Saturday it did because we were hunting. I was with a group of friends scrambling to get set up before the first rays of light broke in the eastern sky to mark the start of a new day. With temperatures that low the pond had a much thicker ice cover then the film of ice we expected.

Troy was the only one with waders on this morning so he got the task of breaking ice while Billy and I assembled the layout blinds and the decoys to be put out. Rick decided to sit on the dam end about 250 yards away in case the birds decided they wanted to use that end of the pond. With 95 % 0f the pond froze over the hunting could be tough.

We really could of used additional time to get set up but the day broke and the ducks were in the air. Ricks shots at the far end of the pond told us we better stop messing around and get in our blinds because the hunt has begun.

Hunting with me today on our end of the pond was two fellow bloggers; Billy from Blind Ambitions and Troy from Diver Destroyers. Billy and I have hunted all over the country together but this was the first time I’ve hunted with Troy. It was a great day of hunting we didn’t kill much but we had a blast. My knowledge of waterfowl is somewhat limited as I’ve only been chasing waterfowl for a few years now but I learned a lot on Saturday as we hunted. It has also been a while since I spent an entire day waterfowl hunting. Of course there was a lot of joking and ribbing especially when someone shot at the wrong flock of geese scaring off a much closer flock that was locked and dropping towards the decoys. :D

Even though the mercury crept up to 50’ most of the pond remained ice covered all day. Had we been able to make a bigger hole we may have had a bit more birds to bring home. It was a great day of hunting and a good reminder that there is more to hunting then just bagging game. A great day afield with friends is hard to beat. Tune into Moose Droppings the radio show and hear some recordings of the live action from this waterfowl hunt this coming Friday at 1pm.
