February 7, 2007

Skinny Moose Media is happy to announce our newest blog. Phillip Loughlin is from California and is an avid hog hunter. You will be able to find him at The Hog Blog.

Hi all. I’m Phillip Loughlin. It’s hard to define my origins, since I was born in New York City (please, hold the picante sauce commercials) to a couple of North Carolina natives. Three months later, I was in North Carolina, then Virginia, then North Carolina again, and then San Juan, Puerto Rico, then back to North Carolina where I finally finished out my “formative years”! But since my family hails from North Carolina , that’s the place I call home. But just to twist it all around a little bit more, I’m now residing and hunting in California .

It was in North Carolina that I was introduced to, and fell in love with, hunting. Like a lot of folks did, I started out on squirrels and doves, and then moved to deer and waterfowl. By the time I was 13 or so, I had experienced almost every type of hunting southeastern NC had to offer and I was totally hooked on all of it. I soon became a fairly hardcore deer hunter, and with NC’s liberal seasons and limits, it kept me pretty busy. The hog bug didn’t bite me though until I moved to California in the late 90’s. While there is all kinds of great hunting in this state, hog hunting grabbed me by the trigger finger right away. No limit, no season, and a hog population that’s booming out of control… sounded like opportunity to me! Now, as we’re wrapping up the first decade of the new millennium, the hog fever is still just as deeply rooted as it ever was. I still love to deer hunt, and have recently started hunting elk as well. When the urge strikes me, I’ll chase waterfowl and upland birds too. Any time spent in the field with gun in hand is good time, regardless of the quarry.

Outside of hunting, I’ve been involved in the Internet for a pretty long time, and have enjoyed using the power of the Web to promote hunting and the outdoors through participation in online forums, and as Editor of an online magazine, the Jesse’s Hunting and Outdoors Journal. I stepped away from a fairly active freelance writing life to enter the corporate world of training design and technical writing, and finally have the time to return to writing about the outdoors and my favorite sport once again. I hope that this blog will let me share my love of this sport with the readers, and that we can generate some dialogue as well.

Now, let’s go get some hogs!

Phillip Loughlin
