To Digg or Not to Digg, Now That is the Question
by Steve RemingtonJuly 14, 2007
Most of us are familiar with the website Digg.com. For those less aware, it is a social bookmarking site where you can submit specific articles you write up. Then people can vote on your article. More votes ultimately means higher up the rankings your article goes and more people will see it and click on it. The site can help drive traffic to your article.
But does it really work? In my personal experience it has helped bring a rush of traffic momentarily. Usually within 12 hours the traffic returns to normal. Some people believe that if you can submit a new article each day then you can keep that traffic up all the time. But is Digg a good habit to get into? How much is too often? Can you abuse Digg and have it work against you?
The following are some articles I found helped when it comes to learning more about Digg and some of the things to be aware of while using the site. For those who use the site or are looking into it should spend some time learning more about it and these articles will be a great start.

David, thanks for stopping by. The reason I posted your article is that most people aren’t aware of the pitfalls of social bookmarking sites. I think people who use them really should read through your list whether they continue to use them or not.
The post was a little bit tongue-in-cheek as you probably guessed, but there are certainly valid reasons not to use these sites and instead to build traffic and regular visitors more organically. I seem to have memberships of at least 50 of these things and they are also an awful time drain

Yeah I gathered it was tongue in cheek, but they are things to really consider. I like the one that says you could get so much traffic your server could get overloaded and crash…
Actually I know a site that ran out of bandwidth from digg hits and it took almost a full day to get back online. So yes these things are valid and worth thinking about.
Oh, yes, definitely the server overload issue. Almost every site that gets Digged (except big ones like lifehacker, bbc, etc) crash under the weight of the Digg effect. My own sciencetext.com succumbed to a massive influx of 45000 visitors from StumbleUpon
Good strategy is to install wp-cache plugin and optimise MySQL and databases
