Open Air to Broadcast First Show at 3pm (EST)
by Steve RemingtonSeptember 13, 2007
Tune in today at Skinny Moose Radio to listen to Open Air at 3pm. This show is hosted by Tom Remington of the Black Bear Blog. Today’s show will be Tom and myself (Steve) chatting about our plans for Skinny Moose Radio. Each week we will air the show. This is what Tom wrote in reference to what the show will be about each week:
“What I envision for Open Air with Tom Remington is not just me but a lot of participation from other people, other sportsmen and activists who really love the outdoors and are worried that with the trends taking place all around us, there will be no more outdoors to enjoy. I want to talk with other people and talk about the things that really matter. We have to get outdoor sports people talking and becoming vocal. We have stayed quiet for so long that many feel like we don’t care about the issues. That has to change.
“I chose the title “Open Air” because I wanted to be able to let listeners know that the topics of my discussions will reach deeper and wider than mostly hunting issues, which is what the Black Bear Blog is all about. Open means the subject material is wide open and the air signifies the outdoors. When you combine the two together, it should provide for some fantastic topics for conversation.”
So make sure to tune in and let us know what you think. We like feedback
Skinny Moose Media Bloggers Continue to Interview
by Steve RemingtonSeptember 12, 2007
John Stabley, a few days back, reported on the ‘blue tongue’ virus detected in the Illinois white tailed deer population. Of course we all have many questions regarding the virus and how it may impact us and the deer population so John contacted Dr O’Keefe to answer a few of them for us.
John: If someone has livestock, what symptoms should they watch out for?
Dr. O’Keefe: The blue tongue virus has several different varieties in the US there are 2 forms: one that primarily affects white-tailed deer primarily and another that affects primarily affects livestock (mostly cattle). Livestock (cattle, sheep, goats) do not die from the virus that affects deer. There have been reports of cattle that have developed excessive salivation or drooling, cloudy nasal discharge, moderate to severe lameness, poor appetite, and a severe drop in milk production in a dairy herd. Beef cattle have been affected as well. The virus causing EHD was isolated from these herds. These signs can mimic other more serious diseases and a veterinarian should be called to make a diagnosis.

Bryan at deerPhD interviews a Huntin’ Junky’. Apparently he films his own hunting shows. Bryan’s next interview is with Richard Bednar, the CEO of TenPoint Crossbows. Stay tuned.
More Sports at Skinny Moose Media
by Steve RemingtonSeptember 12, 2007
Dean, a new sports blogger here at Skinny Moose Media can be found blogging over at Sports ‘N More! He will covering all aspects of sports from Baseball to Football to More. Heave on over and welcome Dean to the Network.
More on Dean:
I am a sports fan by birth and a sports writer by choice. From the first day I could walk I was thinking sports and now at 36 I am writing about it. Yes, it is a dream come true and I know I don’t have a job; I have a hobby that makes money.
After a brief stint as a political consultant my now 6-year old needed a baby sitter and I needed a career change. So, I ended my political career started writing for a local paper and bingo I was a sports writer. That was back in 2001. Since that bold move I have grown my clientele list to include the likes of CBS Sports and the Dayton Daily News.
I look at sports as an escape from life therefore I’ll leave the off field sagas to other blogs. This is a sports site where the talk is touchdowns, home runs, dunks, and championships.
So, if it is sports you want; come on in and enjoy. If not I think Jerry Springer is sure to be on somewhere.

Range Time
by Coyote JohnSeptember 11, 2007
Just about that time of year again, predator callingis about to get into high gear! Time to hit the range with the new rifle and some new loads and optics on an old friend. I recently bought a new AR, ArmaLite M15A4 (www.armalite.com) and am anxious to see how well it shoots with my hand loads. I had it out once and was impressed with the factory ammo but I know I can do better with hand loads, or so I hope. I also had a rather ”cheap” scope on it and have since upgraded. My old friend is a Sako Vixen, a gift from my wife, way back in 1981. Both rifles are chambered in .223 and both now have new Weaver Grand Slams (www.weaveroptics.com) on them. The Sako has accounted for itself rather admirably in the past 26 years from roe deer and chamois in Europe and from ground squirrels to mule deer here in the USofA. Don’t know if the new kid on the block will live up to the old timer but it will be my primary weapon of choice for this forthcoming predator season. I have worked up five different loads for the AR and will sight in the Sako using the same load I have for the past 15 years: Winchester Brass and Primers (www.winchesterguns.com) , Nosler 55 grain Ballistic Tips (www.nosler.com) and Accurate 2230 powder (www.accuratepowder).

Skinny Moose Round Up – September 8, 2007
by Steve RemingtonSeptember 8, 2007
I haven’t done one of these in a while. Actually I don’t think I have ever called it a round up. So I guess I will mention a few things happening here at the Network with some of the individual blogs and bloggers.
First, Tom Remington, co-owner of Skinny Moose Media and author of the Black Bear Blog will be airing a radio broadcast every Thursday afternoon at 3pm (EST). The name if his show is Open Air and will cover a lot of topics. Go here to read more about it.
Spencer at the Golf Blog called Fore, just completed a second interview. This time it was with Graeme Duncan, the General Manager of Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland. For those who are not up on the latest golf stuff, Carnoustie Golf Links was the site of this year’s PGA British Open.
Kenneth Chesson, a videographer for hunting and fishing shows, has been filming some exciting hunts as of late. Last week Chesson went with Tom Miranda, Producer of ESPN’s Advantage Adventures and Whitetail Country to the Game Trails Lodge in Sturgis, KY for a whitetail hunt. This week Chesson is headed back out with Miranda for a Elk hunt in Portland, OR.
Jeremiah, author of the Fish Geek, is off to the 137th annual meeting of the American Fisheries Society in San Fransisco. Apparently over 1,800 presentations are in order and it is a great way to socialize with other fisheries people all over North America. One of the presentations will be given by Jeremiah himself about environmental factors potentially limiting the distribution of brown trout throughout the West, and how it may affect native cutthroat trout.
Resident goose season started last week in North Carolina. Billy at Blind Ambitions jumps on the opportunity and provides a great way to prepare goose. One of his personal favorites is goose fajita. Sounds delicious!! Head over and learn how to prepare it.
