Update From The Road
by Steve RemingtonOctober 31, 2008
Spent the past five days on a bow hunt with Pam Zaitz of She Outdoor Apparel. We were chasing giant whitetails in Calhoun County, Illinois. Our stand we were hunting was less than a mile from the Pike County line. Anyone who is a serious whitetail hunter knows that the area surrounding Pike County is the land of the giants.
We were hunting with Buck Creek Outfitters and we had a great hunt and saw plenty of deer. We saw several shooters, but just couldn’t get a shot on them.
Last night I flew from Illinois to Colorado to meet up with Larry Weishun. We are leaving Colorado Springs this morning and headed south to Stonewall, Co. There we will be chasing mule deer for the next 7 days.
I didn’t have internet in the last camp, hopefully I will have access in this camp to give daily updates.
This is great - just for you

Neil Young live @ GM Place, October 22nd 2008
by Steve RemingtonOctober 25, 2008
I have to admit, I’d always dismissed Neil Young as a fast-fading, pseudo-rocker with a funny voice who sings pretty miserable songs. I’d never really listened to many of his songs, so when Monkey’s plan of buying tickets to the concert and selling them on for a profit backfired and we had to go to the concert or lose money, I wasn’t particularly looking forward to going. Monkey likes him though, and the folks at work all said they loved Neil Young because he was “pure Canadiana” and now I’m Canadian I should love him too (having said that I did turn down free Celine Dion tickets for the night before - I couldn’t subject myself to that, however Canadian I am).
When we got to the stadium the first warm-up band had just finished so we had to wait for about 20 minutes for Death Cab For Cutie to arrive on stage. I was really looking forward to hearing them play but I found them pretty disappointing overall. Apart from their biggest hits, all the songs were a bit boring. The music was pretty good but we didn’t like the singer much (he reminded me of a weird mix of Placebo singer Brian Molko, whom I like, and the Pet Shop Boys‘ Neil Tennant, whom I hate), and the acoustics weren’t great as the microphone wasn’t loud enough so you could barely hear the lyrics.
After that disappointment we waited for the main show, and wow! Neil Young can really rock! He started off with his heavier, electric guitar stuff, then went acoustic for the main portion of the gig, then back to his guitar-hero stuff for the last few songs. I loved all of it, except for a four-song stint towards the end. His voice is still pretty strange, but in an imperfectly beautiful way. I don’t know, perhaps your hearing changes as you get older much like your taste buds change?
He finished off with Rockin’ In The Free World, which was amazing and sent the proper fans in the building totally nuts, then he encored with the Beatles song A Day In The Life, which was a bit of a strange choice but very well done and allowed him to slowly dismantle his guitar.
All in all it was a great gig and to my surprise I knew more than a couple of the songs. His guitar work was absolutely magnificent throughout so I can now see why he is known as one of the greats, and he has definitely turned me into a fan.
Some problem solvers
by Steve RemingtonOctober 25, 2008
Everyone concentrates on the problems we’re having in this country
lately: illegal immigration, hurricane recovery, alligators attacking
people in Florida.
Not me. I concentrate on solutions for the problems. It’s a win-win
situation.
+ Dig a moat the length of the Mexican border.
+ Send the dirt to New Orleans to raise the level of the levies.
+ Put the Florida alligators in the moat along the Mexican border.
Any other problems you would like for me to solve today ? Yes!
Think about this one:
1. Cows
2. The Constitution
3. The Ten Commandments
C O W S
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad
cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Canada
almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state
of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they
are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our
country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.
T H E C O N S T I T U T I O N
They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq . Why don’t we
just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it
has worked for over 200 years, and we’re not using it anymore.
T H E 1 0 C O M M A N D M E N T S
The real reason that we can’t have the Ten Commandments posted in a
courthouse is this:
You cannot post ‘Thou Shalt Not Steal,’ ‘Thou Shalt Not Commit
Adultery,’ and ‘Thou Shall Not Lie’ in a building full of lawyers,
judges and politicians…It creates a hostile work environment.
It is Time for America to Speak up!
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Forgive
quickly. Leave the rest up to GOD !
Never forget anyone that made you SMILE. I HOPE IT WAS ME !!!!

Gearing Up To Ride In The Cyber World
by Steve RemingtonOctober 25, 2008
Seems the chill in the air is bringing us all out of our heat-induced comas. Everyone is getting ready online and off, waiting for big huge dumps of snow (glorious snow!!!) and gearing up their blogs and snowmobile sites. So today it’s time to weed through some emails and send you on your way to other great sled sites of interest (at least, the ones who were kind enough to email or feature me lately
).
Rippin’ Round The Web
Kristy-Martin.com
I posted the other day about Kristy Martin’s new site. DO NOT forget to stop by. She might be the coolest sled chick I [kind of] know (duh–after me of course, I’m that conceited :) just kidding). At the very least, she definitely has bragging rights to the coolest sled-chick pictures. I barely have any of myself, as I’m the one always carries the camera, unless Sarah is with us (don’t listen to what I said earlier Sarah, you’re the coolest sledchick I know). They wouldn’t be nearly so adventurous anyway. But hey–if you have cool pics of a sled chick riding, send them in and give her a run for her money. And by that (Men get your heads out of the gutter) I mean REAL pictures like Kristy’s–of REAL women riding REAL SNOWMOBILES. On snow. IN winter. Clad in weather-protective clothing with freeze ratings and everything. No bikini shots.
To get back on subject, here are the pages you have to visit at Kristy’s site:
There’s the Home Page, of course, but pay particular attention to some great events and causes on this page. You really want to read more about Kristy while you’re there, too.
ZenWaiter
We can never forget our good buddy Zen, who pops in from time to time to keep me motivated by featuring the SledChix blog on his site (click on this week’s featured snowmobile blog and see where you come back to
). By the way, he’ll be at NOVI next week to, so give him a shout if you see him! He’ll be the loud, hairy Canadian I’d guess LOL. He’s doing 4 shows with snowtrailstv.com on PBS this winter, which I cannot wait to see! Zen has a much more comprehensive list of snowmobile shows than I have, be sure to check that out. He’s got his own page full o’ podcasts, and hey! Zen blogs, too. Read it here: Zenwaiter blog. One day maybe he’ll even come by and explain that name…
SkinnyMoose’s Own CamoGirl
She’s not a sledder, but she’s a girl with a gun so don’t go pi$$ing off CamoGirl. She does have a love of the outdoors to rival any girly sledhead or guy, and from time to time she features women snowmobilers, as she did in this post last week. Thanks for the heads up!
Okay I THINK that’s all of you for now, but since I know you are all still groggy from the long summer and still coming back to life, I know that more will be coming up soon. Do tell! No fair keeping secrets, share the link and we’ll share the love. Send your website or event, or Kitty, maybe your latest snowmobile shirts and products (with pics)?
Winter is a comin’! It’s time to come back to life!
Send it all to sledderchick@gmail.com
Notice to All Employees
by Steve RemingtonOctober 25, 2008
As of November 5, 2008, IF President Obama is officially elected into office, our company will instill a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:
1. All salespeople will be pooling their sales commissions into a common pool that will be divided equally between all of you. This will serve to give those of you who are underachieving a “fair shake.”
2. All hourly employees will be pooling their wages, including overtime, into a common pool, dividing it equally amongst yourselves. This will help those who are “too busy for overtime” to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work extra hours.
3. All top management will now be referred to as “the government.” We will not participate in this “pooling” experience because the law doesn’t apply to us.
4. The “government” will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week, encouraging its workers to continue to work hard “for the good of all.”
5. The employees will be thrilled with these new policies because it’s “good to spread the wealth.” Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more “patriotic.”
6. The last few people who were hired should clean out their desks. Don’t feel bad though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he’ll let you stay in your home for as long as you want even if you can’t pay your mortgage. If you appeal directly to our democratic congress, you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts (shouldn’t all Americans be entitled to nice looking hair?) !!!
If for any reason you are not happy with the new policies, you may want to rethink your vote on November 4th.
Desert Rat Talks With Ted Nugent
by Steve RemingtonOctober 23, 2008

OK, so “talks” is a bit of a stretch… You may recall me making a previous blog entry about Ted Nugent. I am currently about 1/3 of the way through Nugent’s Book - Ted,White and Blue. I will be posting a full review in the future, but I have to tell you - so far, his book has exceeded my expectations. It has the “in your face” rhetoric that you would expect, but it also has a ton of common sense. More than once I have exclaimed “Yeah! That’s what I think too!” and hurried off to show my wife some particular passage, quip, or pontification. I would recommend this book to any of you, hands down!
Anyway, in my discussions with Emily the Publisher, I asked if she thought Ted Nugent could grant me an interview, and I offered to do it via e-mail. She replied “No problem”, and true to her word, I had answers in hand within a day or two. Is it an interview, when it is via e-mail? I dunno. Regardless, this little blogger can now claim to have had a personalized question-and-answer session, with The Nuge himself. Enjoy!
1) DR - What prompted you to write the Manifesto? Was there a straw that broke the camel’s back, or was it a project that has been simmering, and the time had finally come? TN - The intense energy and appreciation for my joy of life from 60 years clean and sober drive me to do all I can to give back and fight for upgrade as a participating American in this glorious experiment in self government. The desoulling of America has been metastasizing for at least 70 years since the misdirection of the suicidal New Deal and the so called Great Society debacle. Rewarding misbehavior is a surefire path to self destruction and I am compelled to raise as much hell as I possibly can to change America’s course. It is always the right time.
2) DR - With all these great ideas, is there a run for political office in your future? TN - My campaign manager, Mrs. Nugent, will make that determination. You never know.
3) DR - How did political correctness and pandering become so pervasive, that even “right-wing” politicians are afraid to address hard issues effectively and honestly? TN - A growing segment of the American society is on the receiving end of the American Dream and have deceitfully over pressured the corrupt bureaucrats to redistribute wealth while rewarding slovenly, gluttonous behavior with no accountability whatsoever. Too many Americans have conveniently forgotten the past and a cult of denial has taken over. We must end it now.
4) DR - For average hunters, what should they be doing, to preserve our way of life? Political activism? Public education? Conservation groups? TN - If just the licensed hunters in America actually voted their conscience, America would be on the fast track to recovery. But horrifically, apathy in our sporting community is pandemic and beyond embarrassing. We should all become extremely active, vocal, and communicative to the absolute best of our individual ability and join the NRA and SCI at the very least.
5) DR - How are you feeling about the upcoming election? TN - Sick to my stomach. I pray America wakes up ASAP and votes McCain/Palin and then turns up the activism heat to an all-time high.
6) DR - Have you been to Arizona to hunt Coues yet? If not, we really need to get you over here. It might make a good TV show, too! TN - I love my AZ hunting. I have hunted elk, mule deer, Coues and javelina and look forward to more in the future. An AZ adventure would surely make wonderful Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild TV. Come to tednugent.com and invite us ASAP!
More Reasons I?m Desperate To Live In Maine
by Steve RemingtonOctober 22, 2008
This was the headline from this afternoon’s article in the Bangor Daily News:
First snowfall brings 6 inches to northern Maine
Okay, I don’t plan to live in Fort Kent, but I have been there and we have considered it (Bill still does). Nevertheless, it’s only a couple hours’ drive from where we do intend to live. And that’s a heluva lot closer than Massachusetts!

Here’s to snow and more snow!
Hiking the Baden-Powell Trail
by Steve RemingtonOctober 22, 2008
We have spent the last couple of weekends hiking half of the 48 Km Baden-Powell Trail on Vancouver’s North Shore. The trail runs from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to Deep Cove in North Vancouver.
The week before last we hiked from the bottom of Grouse Mountain east to Lynn Canyon Park (about 7.5Km), and last weekend we hiked the 12.2 Km from Deep Cove west to Lynn Canyon Park. Both hikes were great; the shorter hike was the more demanding of the two and had less foot traffic on the trail but the longer hike also had plenty of ups and downs and a few rough patches which made it fairly challenging over the longer distance.
Both hikes had a fantastic Canadian feel because of the rainforest scenery and air but I think the longer one was the more interesting overall - half an hour in you reach a cliff top (Quarry Rock Lookout) with an amazing view over Indian Arm inlet, Deep Cove and Belcarra.
The hike takes you by plenty of pretty little creeks and waterfalls, then eventually you walk alongside two big rivers (Seymour and Lynn Creek), crossing the very stable bridge over Seymour Canyon and ending it all with a little wobble over the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge. It’s definitely the hike I’d like to take my fitter visitors on.
We plan to do the remainder of the Baden Powell Trail but perhaps next year when we own a car, as part of the trail through Cypress mountain is not accessible by public transport which makes it difficult to do day hikes.
Before winter sets in we will probably head back to our favourite parks which lie next to Lynn Canyon Park - Lynn Headwaters Regional Park and Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve. Is it any wonder that we are planning to leave our condo in the city and move to a house in the Lynn Valley early next year?!
