Ammo update
by Mike BellJune 30, 2009
Heres this weeks ammo update as reported by Michael Bane on his blog. If your buying at wally-world, keep looking. Ours still aint got any ammo in!
There are a few bright spots on ammo. There seems to be a lot of 5.56/.223 around right now, at reasonable prices, $300-$400 per K. Nine mil is coming into the pipeline, too, but the prices are still badly inflated. It seems to me that .22LR is lagging a bit behind, with mostly target variants available. I’ve been shooting a lot of the Aguila blue box low-end target stuff (they have several more expensive target variations) I got a good deal on from Midway USA a few weeks ago, and I’ve been very happy with it.Primers…fuggetaboutit, at least for the time being. I found Federal Small Pistol Magnum, but only 3K. Strongly suggest you sign up for Midway USA’s email alerts, then buy the primers when the email comes in. I got an alert on large pistol primers, which I haven’t seen in a coon’s age, last week, but I was away from my computer. By the time I signed in 3 hours after the alert arrived, they were all gone.

California Finally Gets Its Waiver
by Greg L JohnsonJune 30, 2009
California’s request for a waiver that would allow it to set its own, more stringent standards for emissions from cars and trucks, and which had been denied under the Bush Administration, has finally been approved by the EPA. That’s pretty good news by itself, but it’s actually bigger than one state’s request, there are plenty of others lined up waiting to follow California’s lead.
The EPA’s granting of the waiver request immediately clears the way for California and 13 additional states to require reductions in tailpipe emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. The Clean Air Act gives California special authority to enact stricter air pollution standards for motor vehicles than the federal government’s, but EPA must approve a waiver of federal standards before California’s rules can take effect.
When it comes to emission standards, california has kind of the same influence that Texas does in high school text books. Their decisions affect so many people that manufacturers and publishers are practically forced to adopt the state standard as a national standard. So it could very well be that the EPA’s grant of a waiver for California is in essence the first step in a stricter national standard for greenhouse gas emissions for the entire country.

Gun sales slowing??

Guns N’ Grosses: Arms Makers Fall Back From Obama Surge
By BILL ALPERT
Gun fanciers have loaded up on 15-round pistols and military-style rifles since the November election of a Democratic Congress and a president partial to gun control.
The fear of a renewed federal ban on assault weapons has boosted the revenues and shares of gun makers Smith & Wesson Holding and Sturm, Ruger.
Southport, Conn.-based Ruger saw earnings quadruple in its fiscal first quarter from a year ago, rising to about $6 million, or 30 cents a share, on revenue of $64 million. Smith & Wesson’s earnings doubled in its fiscal fourth quarter, to $7.4 million, or 14 cents a share. The Springfield, Mass., company’s revenue was up 20% to $100 million.
On this rush of business, investors bid up shares of Ruger to as high as $13.71, from $6.50 before the election, while Smith & Wesson stock has risen to more than $7.50, from a pre-election $1.60.
But now the gun industry’s leading indicator — the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s monthly count of the instant background checks it runs for gun dealers — is settling back toward pre-election levels. While November background checks were 42% above the year-earlier level, May’s were up just 15%.
Dealers confirm the slowdown. “It was really big around the first of the year,” says a Georgia dealer (who, like all we found, wanted to remain unnamed). “Now, it’s starting to taper back off. It’s not near like it was. Everyone is starting to relax.”
If the recent sales burst turns out to be just a one-time pop, it won’t be the first time…or even the second. Firearm sales spurted in 1993, before the federal assault-weapons ban.
Yet within a few years, gun sales returned to the pre-ban trendline. Another rush for guns after 9/11 lasted only about three months. And the rest of the time, guns have provided only flat sales and narrow margins for Ruger or Smith & Wesson.
Smith & Wesson advised shareholders last week that its backlog and revenues might ease off, sequentially, in the current July fiscal quarter. By Friday, the company’s shares had themselves eased to around $5. Ruger shares, meanwhile, were about $12.
North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission Issues Warning About Bears
by MooseJune 30, 2009

With this past weekend’s excitement in Durham about the bear and the bear (probably the same one) getting struck on I 85 NCWRC issued some advice today.
Residents can prevent conflicts with black bears by:
• Not approaching or following a bear when one is sighted. Instead, tell your neighbors and keep a adequate distance away from the animal. Unless fed, the bear will leave the area.
• Securing bags of trash inside cans stored in a garage, basement or other secure area, and placing outside as late as possible on trash pick-up days – not the night before.
• Purchasing bear-proof garbage cans or bear-proof your existing garbage container by outfitting it with a secure latching system.
• Discontinuing feeding wild birds during spring and summer, even with feeders advertised as “bear proof.” Bears can still be attracted to seed that spills on the ground.
• Avoiding “free-feeding” pets outdoors. If you must feed pets outdoors, make sure all food is consumed and empty bowls are removed.
• Cleaning all food and grease from barbecue grills after each use. Bears are attracted to the food odors and may investigate.
Some good advice for all of us to keep in mind.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., June 30, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a leading provider of technology solutions and the market leader in electronic control devices (ECDs), announces that the long awaited self-contained wireless TASER(r) eXtended Range Electronic Projectile (XREP(tm)) shotgun rounds are now available. Together with O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. a leader in the design and manufacturing of firearms, we further announce the commercial launch of the TASER(r) X12(tm) Less-Lethal Shotgun (LLS) by Mossberg(r).
The XREP is a wireless ECD capable of delivering the proven TASER Neuro Muscular Incapacitation effect to a maximum range of 100 feet, which is approximately twice the effective range of other 12-gauge less-lethal munitions options currently available on the market. There are two versions of the XREP — the XREP RL, a “Rifled” round and the XREP FL, a “Finned” round. The XREP RL is specially designed for use with the TASER X12 LLS by Mossberg, utilizing a custom twist rifling optimized for low velocity rounds. The XREP FL is capable of being fired from any existing smooth bore 12-gauge pump-action shotgun.
The X12 LLS is the world’s first dedicated less-lethal 12-gauge pump-action shotgun that utilizes Radial(tm) Ammunition Key technology to only allow the firing of the TASER XREP R or other future less lethal rounds. The radial ammunition key prevents the firing of a regular lethal shotgun round.
“This is an exciting day for TASER International as we launch the first wireless TASER capability while breaking the limitations of range and accuracy of traditional 12 gauge impact rounds,” said Rick Smith, CEO and founder of TASER International. “Our teaming with Mossberg, a world renowned leader in the firearms industry, allowed us to leverage almost a century of firearms expertise to develop an integrated system that provides truly breakthrough performance. The availability of the innovative XREP and X12 will change the way law enforcement, corrections and military personnel patrol and protect our lives.”
“We are proud to partner with TASER International for the TASER X12 system,” said A. Iver Mossberg, Jr., CEO for Mossberg. “We are certain our new shotgun platform will save and protect lives.”
The TASER X12 LLS or TASER XREP are available for purchase through TASER International.

by dukkillrJune 30, 2009

The puppies are going to help me celebrate post #200 of the second edition of The Daily Limit! Actually these two punks were born just over a year ago and were 8 weeks old and waiting to go to their new homes when I snapped this photo.
I’ve really enjoyed the last 9 months or so. I’ve met some interesting new people: fellow bloggers, hunters, the occasional meat head… This blog has also changed the way I go afield for the better. I carry my camera everywhere I go now. I try to think of a good way to document anything that might be interesting. Now as I go back over some of the photos and posts it brings back pleasant memories:
I think about how much I enjoyed this classic goose hunt.
Or how hard my heart was pounding when this buck turned and walked my way.
Or how much fun it was to bowfish with The Old Man in a flood.
I wouldn’t have even had my camera with me to take this picture if not for the blog.
Or the pronghorn hunt that actually led to the start of this blog.
Or the post that paved the way for the next 199.
Actually I’ve had fun just going back looking for links to these old posts. I’m thankful to those of you who check in regularly and even more grateful for those of you who contribute by giving me your thoughts or sending me pictures of your outdoor adventures. Keep them coming, and please let me know what you think in the future.
Inner City Encounter With Nature
by MooseJune 30, 2009
Nightfall Norfolk River Front
Ever have one of those surprising encounters with nature that just makes you stop with awe? I had one the other evening that caught me by surprise and although it only lasted a moment it made a lasting impression on me.
I’m on the road this week for training in Norfolk Virginia a very beautiful city. I was walking through the financial district headed towards the waterfront. Getting close to sunset so the area was pretty quiet compared to other parts of the city. Not really expecting to see much wildlife except for maybe a pigeon or two. To witness a peregrine falcon snatching a pigeon was a pretty cool sight. Many cities with skyscrapers have become home peregrines as well as other birds of prey. Of course I didn’t have my camera in my hand but I’m not sure I could have caught the shot because it was so quick.
A search of the net and I found a little bit of information on the project to restore peregrine falcons. Looks like Virginia has had some success with this program.
CCB biologists have worked in partnership with the state of Virginia, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and various other partners since the late 1970s to restore and manage peregrine falcons in Virginia. We monitored 21 breeding pairs during the 2008 breeding season.
This year the entire breeding population nested on artificial structures including wooden peregrine towers (12), bridges (5), a fishing shack (1), a ship (1), a power plant stack (1), and a high-rise building (1). The single territory on a natural cliff face in Shenandoah National Park was not active this year. Twenty pairs made breeding attempts and produced 76 eggs and 47 young that survived to banding age. There was a high depredation rate this year with four broods lost on the towers to raccoons and Great-horned Owls.
While I expect to catch unique encounters with nature when I’m in the turkey blind or the deer stand this serves as a great reminder that nature is all around us we just need to take the time to see it.
With no photos of the peregrine falcon I’ve included some night photos I’ve taken along the river front here in Norfolk. A beautiful city especially in the early evening and at night fall.
