Florida’s Python Season

The state’s first licensed hunting season for the Burmese python has ended, with a body count of 37.

A state-sanctioned pilot hunting program aimed at determining location and formulating an eradication plan ended Saturday with 37 of the invasive reptiles being killed.

“This was more about finding where they are and seeing if we can contain their expansion,” Scott Hardin, exotic species coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told the Miami Herald.

The constrictors can measure 18 feet long and weigh 160 pounds, and wildlife officials say they could number in the tens of thousands in the South Florida region — mostly in the Everglades.

Snake owners who released pythons when they became too large to manage are believed largely responsible for this troubling phenomenon. The snakes, which are reproducing in the wild, have become a threat to native wildlife.

The wildlife commission is collecting data from the snakes killed so far and will expand the hunting program next year. Meanwhile, licensed hunters after other species can continue to kill pythons in designated areas, including parts of the Everglades around Big Cypress National Preserve.

“If you’re in there hunting, and you see a python, you can kill it,”‘ Hardin said.

Hunters have used nets and snares and guns to subdue the reptiles, but all legal hunting methods are allowed, including bang sticks, harpoons and spear guns.

In a letter encouraging the harvesting of pythons, posted on the commission website, Chairman Rodney Barreto wrote, “You can even have some fancy cowboy boots made from python, but I don’t recommend eating the meat because testing revealed high levels of mercury in the meat — levels well above that considered safe to eat.”

Note: Found this over on “myoutdoortv.com” ……. we think coyotes are a problem

<img src="http://flashforwardtvseries.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Simon.png" alt="Simon" title="Simon" width="200" height="381" size-full wp-image-8" />Little is really known about Simon’s life prior to the Blackout. We know he was considered to be a genius in quantum physics. He was involved with a group that included Lloyd Simcoe, Gordon Myhill, Elizabeth Rhee, Gabe Clayson, and Philippe Tarhan in conducting an experiment that resulted in the Global Blackout; which may have been the direct result or a side effect of the experiment. Simon is able to discuss advanced physics concepts such as the double-slit experiment and Schrödinger’s cat. He has an unidentified relationship with a woman or girl named Annabelle.

After the Blackout
While entertaining his son, Lloyd receives a call from Simon, who says they need to talk. Although Lloyd states it is not a good time to meet, Simon dismisses his claim, saying that meeting up with him is an inconvenience he has to put up with, since they are responsible for the “single greatest disaster in human history.” (Ep. “Black Swan”)

Simon is next seen on a train, and it is revealed through conversation with a young woman passenger that he is a well-known physics genius. He begins explaining theories about time and space, further suggesting his involvement in causing the flashforward. After the two sleep together, Simon reveals that he saw himself strangling a man to death in his flashforward, which the woman is surprised by this information. Simon later appears in the back seat of Lloyd’s car, complaining that Lloyd “never calls,” and Lloyd expresses regret for his involvement in the flashforward before the two drive off together. (Ep. “Scary Monsters and Super Creeps”)

Simon is later seen toying with a bracelet that spells Annabelle. (Ep. “The Gift”)

Subsequently, Simon finds Lloyd in his son’s hospital room, establishes that Dylan will be able to leave the hospital shortly – conferring with Olivia Benford – and engages in a game of poker to settle a dispute over going public about the Blackout with Lloyd. Though Simon was obviously the superior player, he lost in a winner takes all hand with Lloyd.

Simon’s Flash Forward
Simon describes that in his flash-forward he was in a fight with another unnamed man whom he then choked to death. He adds that he then looked down at the man’s dead body with satisfaction. (Ep. “Scary Monsters and Super Creeps”)

A Minnesota deer hunter shot a deer from his tree stand. He climbed down, field dressed the deer and climbed back into his stand to wait for the end of legal hunting. Evidently he could not drive out with his ATV legally until after legal hunting hours.

After getting back into his stand, several wolves appeared, interested in his buck he just shot. Nothing he could do really would scare the wolves away.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune has the story, complete with all the usual pro wolf talking points – wolves don’t bother people, a declining deer population is because of bad winters, you know all the rest.

The idea of this blog is not just to provide recaps of episodes but also to discuss the ongoing investigation, ponder theories, and discuss possible scenarios. If you have been following the TV series, you certainly have theories of your own as to not just what caused the “blackout”, but why?

And is your destiny written? What about the Officer who saw his flash forward, disliked what he saw, and killed himself?

Who is Lloyd Simcoe and Simon Campos? We know they think they caused the blackout…

The timing of the “hack” should send up a red flag that someone wanted this information released prior to the grand summit meeting on global climate coming up in a short time in Copenhagen, Denmark. Therefore, it requires few brains to determine this wasn’t a “hack” in the classic sense of what a computer hack is. Whoever pulled this information had a pretty good idea what they were looking for and it’s my guess it was more of a “copy and paste” escapade than a hack. But let’s be honest, hack makes the Climate Research Unit sound to be more of a victim and less an agency caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

If laws were broken to obtain this information then whoever is responsible should be prosecuted. Attempts to legally obtain this information were stalled, which I believe has played a role in the option to “hack” into the system illegally.

While some are rushing to flame the “smoking gun”, others are just as quickly driving the tanker truck to the scene to extinguish the fire. Unfortunately for the rest of us , the truth will be spun and twisted and we will never know what was truth. And therein lies the real crime of what is before us and has been for some time now.

The issue of climate change, whether man-made or natural, stands to put a lot of money in the pockets of a few people. That’s why this has nothing at all to do with science and everything to do with deception and greed. Let’s not be so naive as to think this has only come to our attention with the climate debate. No, this has been a problem ever since government began handing out money for “scientific research”. One of the problems with this is the lack of any incentive to find a solution. In other words, the money dries up and someone is out of a job.

Climate change is different in that if someone can show that man is the culprit, we can punish them by making them pay, in more ways than most of us have had time to discover.

While writers at the New York Times and Huffington Post play down the importance of what is contained in the documents released, others from the skeptics’ side, like Climate Depot, are eager to exploit and brandish the so called smoking gun. All sides should be seeking truth.

As much as I would like to see something that shows crooked scientists for the purpose of disproving the theory of anthropogenic global warming, this event is only the tip of the iceberg. Science and research, along with all its credibility, is in danger of being destroyed. Where would that leave us?

Keith Johnson in the Wall Street Journal tells us that one email found in the well over one thousand released, reveals the concern of one scientist about what is happening.

One email from 1999, titled “CENSORED!!!!!” showed one U.S.-based scientist uncomfortable with such tactics. “As for thinking that it is ‘Better that nothing appear, than something unacceptable to us’ … as though we are the gatekeepers of all that is acceptable in the world of paleoclimatology seems amazingly arrogant. Science moves forward whether we agree with individual articles or not,” the email said.

If our science world was so innocent!

I have said since the beginning that when those led by Al Gore, began traveling the globe telling the world that the science was settled on climate change, the real danger became the stifling of scientific research and discovery. We can never assume science is “settled”, whatever that means. It says we have stopped looking for answers and this comes at a time when science is only in the beginning stages of learning about climate and what influences it.

This all goes far beyond the simple discussions of who or what is to blame for climate change.

But if we now are seeing that science is becoming or has already become as corrupt as our political system, then where do we go from here. The people’s trust of academia will be seriously eroded and they will turn their backs on science in the same fashion as they have turned their backs on our corrupt political machine.

Our Congress enjoys an embarrassing 26% approval rating and much of that is because no American can trust in the words that flow out of their corrupted mouths. Is this what we want from science?

Like sheep, we have had it drummed into our heads how and what to do about early detection of cancer in ourselves. Now, coming only days before a government run health care program is being proposed before Congress, our “scientists” tell us we don’t have to do that anymore. Is the timing of this merely coincidental?

Unfortunately, too many Americans have gotten lazy and they rely upon government and the science world to spoon fed them. Lazy or not, they can with the drop of a hat, lose their trust in government and in this case science.

If humans are destroying the planet because of their everyday living standards, the only way we are ever going to know for certain and what to do about that is to make sure the science research is wide open and honest. This cannot be done by demonizing and attempting to destroy the credibility of every scientist who doesn’t agree. Nor can it happen by working to cover up evil because it doesn’t fit our narrative.

If scientists are lying and covering up the truth about what they have discovered for political, economic or some other reason, isn’t truth what we want to find out? Why is the truth so scary for so many people? Never mind. I already know the answer to that.

My prediction as to what will transpire in regards to these “hacked” documents is that it will pretty much follow the path of everything else these days. The liberal media will sweep it under a rug because it doesn’t neatly fit into the narrative. Those willing to take up any discussion on it will be efforts to demonize the skeptics of global warming and put all their focus on who hacked into the computer system and none in finding whether this information holds any truth.

It’s business as usual and as for me, I have one more reason to add to my long list of why nothing that is uttered by any politician or anyone connected in anyway to government holds truth.

It’s a very sad day for humanity.

Tom Remington

Lake Superior is famous for the ferocity of its winter winds and storms, and a new study suggests that, if anything, there are bigger storms to come.

As the world’s largest lake warms, it is kicking up stronger winds. The extra-blustery weather on Lake Superior is causing faster currents, and possibly changing the ecology of the lake and the distribution of local air pollution.

So says a new study of Lake Superior — the world’s largest lake by surface area, containing 10 percent of the unfrozen freshwater on the planet — published this week in Nature Geoscience.

Faster currents, stronger winds, one of the world’s more treacherous bodies of water could be even more so in days to come. Be prepared for even worse consequences, something on the order of a revival of “The Wreck of the Edmund Firtzgerald“.

I will post the flies as they come in. But be aware….. I will not post the tyer’s name. Once we reach the minimum, I will update the pics with names.

Seems silly I know…….but if this contest folds I would not want to embaress those willing to attempt it. The internet is a strange place and all that is written is forever. You cannot erase anything in the ether of an electronic pulse. So come all you eager tyers and lets have a game of it.

My odyssey began with two weekends of getting to know the area I would be hunting. (see the Scouting trip part 1 and Part 2 columns earlier). From these trips I was hopeful that after a two week break from hunting, the rut was going to kick in and we would be seeing bucks out cruising for does during the day. There were plenty of rifle hunters telling stories about the “one that got away”.

The trip began with a five hour drive right after work Friday night. I had loaded everything I would need in old “Mighty Whitey” , the 2001 GMC crew cab pickup. That included the 12×12 Alaknak II, a borrowed tent woodstove and 4 coolers. The coolers were designated “Frozen Food”, “Cold Food” “Drinks and Ice”, and “Cool food”. I had enough to feed four people for nine days or more. Of course I had hunting clothes and gear as well. I arrived in camp at 11:00 pm to a foggy, misty drippy site where Rich, my hunting partner had already erected a dome tent. Without unpacking more than my sleeping bag and pad, we sacked out and listened to the drips hitting the roof of the tent.

Day 1 , Saturday

We hunted right out of camp on Saturday morning. We still hunted and did some rattling through the scrub oak that lined the side of the hills. I caught a quick glimpse of a buck slipping away one ridge over, but we were not able to verify if it was a buck or not. I’m betting it was. We hunted until noon, then returned to set up camp.

By 3 pm camp was set. Rich’s dome tent was the cooking station, and my 12×12 tent with woodstove was the sleeping quarters and dining area. We slipped out for an uneventful evening hunt and to make a plan for the next morning. We had not anticipated the Quail hunters in the area would be so prevalent, and the echoes of gunshots reverberated through out the countryside. We also saw some bear hunters in the area.
