Fantasy preview: Atlanta

Progressing into the NFC South, here comes that fantasy wasteland known as the Atlanta Falcons. There might be some improvement this year, but not much.

QUARTERBACKS: Chris Redman started the last five games of last season and wasn’t too shabby, delivering a four-TD game in Week 17. That last game was the only victory in that stretch, which leads to this reason why Redman isn’t worth a flyer as a QB2 — rookie Matt Ryan is waiting in the wings. If (when) the Falcons fall out of playoff contention, will they turn to him over Redman and Joey Harrington? Taking Ryan or Redman as a let’s-see-what-happens QB3 in the last round, but not as your backup fantasy quarterback.

RUNNING BACKS: Michael Turner arrives from San Diego to becomes Atlanta’s new featured back. It will be interesting to see what he does now that he’s no longer in LaDainian Tomlinson’s shadow. In this offense, however, I’d not select him higher than a RB3. Jerious Norwood would have stepped into the starting running back position had Turner not been acquired, which indicates the Falcons weren’t ready to make him the workhorse — he’s a RB5 or 6 at best.

WIDE RECEIVERS: Roddy White put up surprisingly decent numbers last year, but can he do it again? If so, he’s a WR2, but my gut is telling me he’s less risky as an WR3. Michael Jenkins garnered 532 yards and four touchdowns — solid WR4 numbers. Joe Horn’s best days are behind him, he’s no more than a WR5.

TIGHT ENDS: With Alge Crumpler gone, Ben Hartsock takes over as the starting tight end. Oh, Hartsock hasn’t scored a touchdown in his NFL career. He might get that first one this season, but with the depth at tight end, he’s a TE3 with a little sleeper potential.

KICKER: After an eternity in Denver, Jason Elam moves indoors in Atlanta. His points numbers might not improve with the Falcons’ offense, but he’s still reliable enough to be a low-end K1 or very solid K2.
