The kids without Hall
The strange, sad saga that is the Oakland Raiders continued this week when the team cut cornerback DeAngelo Hall. The Raiders had only signed him to a $72 million deal in the offseason, so his release, while quizzical if any other team had done it, shouldn’t have been unexpected.
Oakland has a long history of signing free agents to insane deals and watching them underperform (including Javon Walker this year). Hall was struggling, but was he struggling so much that you cut him? He will land on another team, probably play better, and still get paid some of his salary from the Raiders. After this episode, will any high-profile free agent dare sign with Oakland? The Raiders aren’t going to emerge from all this chaos anytime soon.
Al Davis should do his team, the fans and the league a favor and sell the team. Of course, he’d probably botch that somehow, too.
