Fantasy preview: Chicago
Back for 2009 is my team-by-team fantasy previews, starting with Da Bears. Again, I’m just focusing on skill players — no IDPs or D/STs, and I’ll only address kickers on teams on which with kicking questions. In the meantime, I’ll also be providing reviews of this summer’s array of fantasy football magazines.
The Bears’ offense went from a big question mark to a big upgrade with the acquisition of quarterback Jay Cutler. When you think all the mediocre the Bears have suffered through over the years, it’s easy to understand why Chicago fans are excited to have Cutler on board.
Quarterback: Cutler put up the best numbers of his career with the Broncos last season, but he drops to a lower-end QB1 simply because he won’t have the WRs he had in Denver. I’ll be surprised if he reaches 4,000 yards, and 20 TDs might be more realistic than 2008’s 25.
Running backs: Matt Forte put up monster numbers in his rookie season, not only rushing for 1,238 yards and eight touchdowns, but also catching 63 passes and 4 TDs. And now he has a decent quarterback to loosen up the field. I’m not sure if I’m confident enough to take him in the top five just yet, but I think he’ll avoid the sophomore slump and is a solid first-round RB1. Kevin Jones is a safe handcuff, but don’t rely on him for anything more than an RB5.
Wide receivers: Devin Hester improved last year as he continued his transition to the offense. With Cutler in tow, Hester, as the Bears’ top receiver, will see his numbers increase, though not quite enough to be a WR2. Earl Bennett is a popular sleeper this summer because he played with Cutler at Vanderbilt. Take him late, but don’t get your hopes up, because with Forte and the Bears’ tight ends, he’s at best Cutler’s fourth option. Juaquin Iglesias and Rashied Davis might surprise during the season, but their not worth a pick on draft day.
Tight ends: Greg Olsen is developing into a solid TE1 after catching 54 passes for 574 yards and five TDs last year, and those numbers will only improve under Cutler. Desmond Clark’s numbers have declined as Olsen has emerged, and though he’s not draftworthy, pick him up quickly if something happens to Olsen.
Kicker: If the Bears’ offense explodes with Cutler, Gould will return to being a top-five kicker. Definitely a K1 no matter what.
