    “The True Sportsman”

Posted by Norm on October 4, 2006

My devotion today is going to be a little different than my past ones. Before each one has had a specific reference to some form of hunting, fishing or outdoor adventure. This one will not have a direct line. Although, I do believe it does have a connection to the “true sportsman”. You see my view of a true sportsman is someone with integrity, hard working, a provider and faithful.

While at work I recently witnessed a husband who was being unfaithful to his wife. They checked into the hotel where I am evening supervisor. About ten minutes after checking in with his wife he came down to use the lobby phone. Well, it happened to be a quiet time in the lobby. Needless to say I heard more of his conversation with his “girlfriend” then I needed to hear.

Since this event I have been thinking about the Bible and what it teaches us about being husbands. We as husbands love to quote the scripture “wives submit to your husbands”.(Ephesians 5:22) Then verse 23 goes on to say “for the husband is the head of the wife…” Verse 24 says “wives should submit to husbands as the church submits to christ”. That’s usually where we stop. Go ahead go on…you can do it….read verse 25. It says “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…”. Now let me say, I have never met a Christian lady who would not be willing to submit to their husbands if husbands would follow verse 25.

To think this man was on vacation, had just checked into a hotel with his wife and couldn’t wait to get away for a couple minutes and talk to this lady. We as Christian husbands need to really focus on loving our wives as Christ loves his church, “us”. I know at times I have failed miserably in this aspect. How about you?

When we are unfaithful towards our wives, we are telling them they are “not good enough”. Worse than that, we are telling our children, “your mom is not worth enough to be faithful to”.

I don’t sit here and point the finger at anyone. When I do there is three more fingers pointing right back at me. I sit here today and say I at times have not treated my wife like Christ treats me. This is a challenge for all of us Christian husbands and sportsman. Christ has given us the perfect model of behavior that we should follow in aspect to our wives.

Let your wife know that you appreciate her, love her and need her in your life today. My wife personally saved me from going down a miserable road that I was traveling in life. Without her I can promise you I would not be sitting here this morning typing a devotion on the Bible.

A “true sportsman” is sincere, honest, hard working and faithful. Be a “true sportsman” to your wife. Love her as Christ loves you.

Some good thoughts, Norm. Faithfulness is about integrity in our relationships.

You said, “I have never met a Christian lady who would not be willing to submit to their husbands if husbands would follow verse 25.” I can agree. Thanks.
