Wyoming and Montana deer, elk, antelope deadlines

If you are planning on entering this year’s license lottery for deer/antelope in Wyoming or deer/elk in Montana, you have until March 15th to get your applications in. I’m not planning on getting out to either state this year, but will be applying for my preference point for each state. Montana announced last week that this is the last year for unlimited archery elk tags and unlimited archery pronghorn tags in certain regions of the state. Both licenses will be going to a draw next fall.

Deer Region C or antelope Unit 23 in Wyoming. I’ve hunted both and would be glad to throw some tips your way. Also, I have hunted just east of Billings, MT for mule deer and in the heart of the Bitterroot Mountains for archery elk on the MT/ID border. Best of luck to all who draw the Unit 270 deer tag in MT, we saw some real stud mulies out there elk hunting a couple years ago.

Some friends and I did apply for Wyoming antelope in unit 23. We have never been to Wyoming so any tips on unit 23 would be much appreciated. We are planning to hunt BLM land along the Powder river or maybe the walk in area. Thanks in advance.

Well, I can tell you that there are zillions of antelope in Unit 23, but I haven’t hunted the public land. We toughed it out for mulies on public, then headed 40 miles south of Gillette to a rancher. He had saved 2 pastures (about 1500 acres each) the previous 2 weekends of season, so we had unhunted antelope to go after. I could get you his name if you wanted. He charged $400/each, but he really treated us like royalty. I have a feeling if you get out there a day before season on public land though and put a couple of suitable goats to bed, you could be done first day.

My brother from PA talked me into Unit 23 so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I got a map from mytopo.com but can’t tell if the orage is public or reservation land.

Do you know if you are going for season opener or into the hunting season? I would recommend paying a nominal fee for a trespass fee and hunting private land…just my opinion. Maps from plicmapcenter.org are the best and have BLM distinguised from all the other land types, easiest map to read that I have found.
