    Bowfishing Frenzy

Well, last night I made it to ’said honeyhole’ and teamed up with good friend Allan Webb.  Just to prevent us from being skunked, I slipped on the waders whacked a carp where I shot 8 yesterday.  I presented him with an inaugural yellow carp when I pulled up the boat landing.  With one fish in the bucket and not having left the boat ramp yet, it was bound to be a good night, right???  Wrong, it was an unbelievable night!!!

We started off with a few spaced out shots on yellow carp, but soon found ourselves fighting for our lives, as carp after carp after carp after carp swam past our stationary boat.  There was so much shooting going on and so many carp that we just sat in one place basically and shot ’til our hearts content.  Thanks Allan for missing that bowfin, he turned out to be my personal best so far… 10-2.

With half a barrel of fish after only one generator run (about 1 hour on a gas tank), we headed back out towards open water and worked a big flat.  There, we continued the fast and furious action piling the fish higher and deeper in rapidly shrinking barrel.  In fact, after we drilled some more, fish starting going in the dry livewell.  3 or 4 bowfin and 15 more carp later, we both had shots at a nice longnose gar (our only opportunity of the night).  I managed to connect but managed to lose him to the water when he pulled off my arrow hoisting him into the boat.

Then the unbelievable happened, we starting letting not dozens but hundreds of carp swim by our boat without shooting as we realized our dwindling storage space was becoming a serious issue.  If it wasn’t “as big as our leg”, we ain’t shooting.  15 or 20 more fish came over the sides of the boat and we were finally out of room…literally.  Fish were sliding off the top of the barrel and the livewell would barely close.  On the way back out to the boat ramp, we saw something pretty awesome… a first for me.  A big boar MINK!!!  Not a common sight in NC, but there he was.  He even put on a few swimming lessons for us.

Anyways, I’ve shot bigger fish before, but never even came close to the numbers we saw last night.  That was the first and hopefully last time (or would I like too many fish to become a common problem…hmmm, let me rethink that) we were both passing up shot after shot after shot after shot after shot.  Our fish totals were 81 total fish, 1 catfish, 10 bowfin, and 70 common carp.  Biggest common carp was 7-2, we boated 4 or 5 citation bowfin.  Allan whacked 2 that were 9-12 and 8-6 respectively.  Awesome night of bowfishing and I can’t wait to get back.

I will post some pics of all the fish laid out after I get those out of an email.  Look for that either tomorrow or Monday!
