Well, my old roommate Andrew came in the mountains and we decided to make a go of it on Friday afternoon.  I must admit that I extremely skeptical with as much rain as we have been getting.  I figured that even if we did find fish, it would just be swirls and mudspots…too muddy to get some shots.  With that in mind, we left the boat in the driveway and just put on some waders and checked out one of my honeyholes that back up to a beaver swamp.

Believe it or not, the bowfishing was awesome.  We weren’t 35 yards off the road when we saw our first mudspot and then we were shocked to see the culprit…a 7 lb. common carp swimming away from us in remarkably clear water.  Andrew put a quick end to his escape attempt with a great long-distance shot.

It was all fish and lots of fish from there on out.  I don’t know if the series of beaver dams functioned to sift out the sediment or what, but we saw tons of fish and shot a total of 52 fish.  48 common carp, 3 bowfin (3 more citation fish)…2 over 9 lbs. and a catfish…Yum!

We missed 4 more bowfin (all smaller males) and countless more carp, but we really got a variety of shooting.  We shot from tree stumps along the creek channel, from on top of beaver dams, in flooded weeds, in flooded timber, where there was water, there was fish!

Andrew even shot his first double ever, actually an ignorant double at that…didn’t even know there was a carp laying behind the one he was shooting at.  That was pretty exciting.  Anyways, hope you enjoyed the story and pictures, click below if you’d like to see a few more.

Hopefully we’ll get out again this weekend before he heads back to the national park to do some more hog culling, but I’m not sure that is going to happen with the rains we’ve gotten since yesterday afternoon.
