Blitzing Blues

Well, I try to keep an eye out to the NC coast this time of year as I am getting psyched to go surf fishing on our annual beach trips (Emerald Isle with the inlaws and OBX with the family). Bogue Inlet Pier at Emerald Isle has a great website that updates detailed fishing reports with pictures at least once a week if not more. They also have tide charts, weather forecasts, etc. and even a 360 degree video camera of what is going on out on the pier LIVE! It is a great resource to plan your summer saltwater fishing outings during beach vacations or otherwise. I think my fellow North Carolinians will find the website helpful. Enjoy!
Oh, the reason the post is ‘Blitzing Blues’ is they are tearing up the bluefish currently down at the coast. Bluefish and Spanish mackerel are hands-down - my favorite fish to catch at the ocean and chunking and winding on a Gotcha plug is my favorite way to do it! A slew of chopper blues have been coming in near-shore the last couple weeks and many fish in the 7-10 pound range reported. Make sure you’ve got a leader tied on! I use 40-50 lb. test monofilament, but wire leaders are also adequate. I like the monofilament so fish aren’t striking at the metallic gleam of a leader, but only have the lure to focus on. Good luck!
