Public Land Deer Hunting I - North Carolina

Posted by dihardhunter on October 9, 2008

I finally got to sneak off to one of the spots on public game lands that I had scouted.  I walked about 6 tenths of a mile off the road and set up on the junction of a clearcut, powerline, and white oak ridge…perfect spot, one would think.

But I didn’t see any deer…  just some wood ducks, mallards, squirrels, grey fox, indigo buntings, cardinals, and a beautiful morning.  I had a great time relaxing and not thinking about my thesis for at least a couple of hours.

I can’t wait to put this behind me and be able to devote some more time to deer hunting, but I guess that its time will come here shortly.

After I got down out of the stand, I walked another strong half mile up a creek and did some more scouting.  Found some white and red oaks that were dropping heavy, but the trees were just too spread out across the landscape to justify the long walk in.  I might be back to the spot I’ll call the ‘3 Corners Stand’, but I think I might turn my attention to some of my better spots.

I found these wild looking little mushrooms…bright orange.  Will update when I get out hunting again.  Tomorrow hopefully.  I’m ready for some tenderloins!

I feel your pain. The past couple of times I’ve went out I’ve been skunked as well on really good setups. I don’t like flip flopping between a bad acorn year and a good one. The strategies that worked last year don’t necessarily produce this year.
