Public Land Deer Hunting - Part II
Posted by dihardhunter on October 12, 2008
Well, got out Friday night to do a little scouting on another public land spot that I had scouted with Google Earth. As I ground-truthed the spot, I found some trails that led through the creek bottoms and some small rubs, but nothing that I would consider to be big tracks or big rubs…so guess what, I’ll leave that spot for somebody less observing to hunt. Yea, a big boy might show up tomorrow, but this time of the year you have got to be hunting hot sign.
After my scouting walk, I strapped on my Summit climber and took off on a .9 mile walk to a spot that I call the “Million Dollar Funnel”. A creek parallels a hardwood ridge which butts up against some high class homes. Only about 75 yards of hardwoods form a great funnel between a white oak feeding area and bedding area. Well, despite how good the spot looked, I didn’t see a deer while sitting in the stand.

Interestingly, I did jump a spike or 3 pointer about 200 yards off the road, but he was nothing I’m interested. On the walk out, I spooked 3 more deer that were feeding in an patch of isolated oak trees. A little tweaking on my stand site, and hopefully I’ll have a big fat doe lined up in my sights.

One more thing that I wanted to post, what kind of hybrid duck is this. Or is it even a hybrid duck. There were about 20 mallards spread out on this public land waterbody and this interesting looking ???mallard/something??? was mixed in with the bunch. Leave your comments below, I’d be interested to hear what everyone thinks this wildfowl is?

I thought this picture was interesting too. Some states have issues with oak regeneration, but this spot was having no issues whatsoever…thick as poison ivy!

I saw a hybrid mallard/pintail mounted in Stuttgart years ago. Never seen one on the wing. I used to kill domestic/mallard hybrids somewhat regularly when I hunted big lakes that had houses and resorts on them. They were generally very fat and had too much white on them.

That thought had crossed my mind, the oddball might have been part Aflac duck/part mallard.
