Unique hunting opportunity - Sandhills Fox Squirrels!

Posted by dihardhunter on October 12, 2008

Thought I would post an idea for a little different day-hunt that you could tackle during the month of October.  Before every fox squirrel-used longleaf pine has a pile of 20 gauge shells piled at the bottom of the tree, take a trip to the Sandhills game lands in North Carolina to chase a unique small game quarry.  Fox squirrels have many different color phases depending on where in the United States they are encountered, but one of their most unique color combinations occurs in the longleaf pine ecosystems of North Carolina.

Salt-and-pepper, sprinkled with hints of red, orange, and brown - fox squirrels from our sandy coastal plain make a fine addition to any game room and are certainly a challenging species to hunt.  Few and far between, hunters had better not become pre-occupied with staring into treetops as the ground-loving squirrels will scurry right under your nose if you aren’t paying close attention.

Me, well…I intend to scurry down to the Sandhills in the next week or two before firearms season for deer starts and get first crack at an over-sized and paint-by-numbers species of the squirrel family.

Season starts tomorrow, October 13 and runs through the end of December.  Remember, 1 is the daily bag limit and on Sandhills game lands hunting is only permitted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.  Hopefully, I’ll have a follow-up blog post to this introductory one that tells of another successful adventure.
