My cousin Scott made a shot-of-a-lifetime (or at least of several years) on this red fox a week or so ago.  Sneaking to the lean-to that straddles 2 old coal strip mines to try some predator calling, he heard a critter bail off the edge and race through the crunchy snow towards the Christmas tree patch at the bottom of the hill.  Busting out of the dense pine stand, he saw the red fox stretched full out at a sprint.  With nothing to lose, he snapped a quick shot at about 100 yards through lots of brush with his .17 HMR.  The fox disappeared with the tiny bullet lodging right behind the fox’s ear.  The tail finally twirled above the snow marking his resting place.  He was a fine male weighing 23 pounds and destined for the taxidermist’s shop.  Great shooting Scott and thanks for sending the picture.

I’ll go ahead and say the shot of a lifetime – a coyote is a small target. A fox? Downright tiny target – and running full speed no less. Impressive – and red fox are a beautiful animal – easy to see why he wants that guy mounted.
