Possum in the Shed!

Sent my 8 year old daughter out at 9 pm last night to feed the cats in the shed out back, when she came in and said “Dad, there’s a big ‘ol Possum in the shed!”So I grabbed the .22 and a 10,000 candlepower flashlight and headed out to the shed where our freezer is. There in the shed are our two cats, (Jasmine and Pumpkin Face) on either side of the freezer looking in the space between it and the wall with probably a 10 pound possum between them. If cats can have facial expressions, I do believe they were pretty proud of themselves. As if they were saying “Lookee here! This is the biggest darn rat we ever caught!!”

So we had to grab the cats to get them out of the line of fire. (Kinda like trying to tie up hounds at the tree when bear hunting). Then Erin, the 8 year old held the flashlight while I dispatched the possum. The shot was pretty loud in the small space, and it startled her and she dropped the flashlight. LIGHTS OUT! Of course the possum gave a squall when I shot him, and the cats squirmed loose, and ran right over me in the dark…..I thought it was the possum!

After I did the Heebee Jeebee dance and got the light back on, I saw the possum laying dead there . We fished him out of there and what does Erin say….”Let’s go show Great Grandpa!’ So she packed him up to show my 88 year old Grandfather. He got a kick out of her telling her “Hunting Story”. After we were leaving his house Erin says to me…

“OK Dad, the next possum in the shed we catch, I wanna shoot it….”
