A non traditional aiming point. - Western Wanderer - Rack Tracker, In the West

    A non traditional aiming point.

The folks at the Best of the West television show have been instrumental in some of the increased interest in long range accurate shooting.  In fact they have an instructional video set on the topic.

Their idea of aiming for a “high shoulder shot” is discussed in the video embedded below.  The idea is that this point of ain is more forgiving of windage or distance judging errors.  When the bullet impacts at the point of aim, the results are consistant, the animal drops in its tracks.  The shot goes low, heart shot, a little back,  back of the lungs or liver hit.  A little forward?  Neck shot.  High?  clean miss or spine shot.

I’ll let Aaron Davidson show and tell:

It makes sense - I just may have to try it out on my next rifle hunt. I need all the help I can get when I hunt with a rifle.

    2. Phillip Says:

I like that high shot and if I can’t get a neck shot it’s my second choice. Quick drop almost every time. If you saw the video of my boar a little while back, that quick Bang-Flop is the result of a high shoulder hit.

I’m still not real fond of this sudden trend toward long-range hunting, but if you’re gonna do it, then at least learning from the experts like the guys at Best of the West is a good step in the right direction. And I’ll stop short of preaching my own gospel, but dangit folks… if you’re gonna shoot long range at critters, then PLEASE practice long range at targets FIRST. Know what your gun is going to do… don’t rely on computer programs and charts.
