First Annual Carve for the Curves A Big Success

    Carve for the Curves, 2009

Kristy Martin was kind enough to update us on the Carve for the Curves Event that was held last weekend.  The event enjoyed great support from several companies and countless individuals.  Looks like all had an excellent ride for an even more excellent cause!

First Annual Carve for the Curves

    Here’s an update from Kristy:

Well the benefit first annual Carve for the Curves went off without a hitch!!! It was a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen, for the Cure, Aspen, to help fight breast cancer. It was held on Saturday March 7, 2009. Over 45 people showed up and we had a great lunch buffet, the door prizes were a hit. I had some great donations from Scott USA, Klim, HMK, Alpine Bank, R & A Electric, and many other local businesses, which ranged from baseball caps, coats, gift certificates to 4 seats at a Colorado Rockies game, and 4 seats to a Colorado Avalanch game. I have raised so far over $1,400.00 to be donated, and of course checks are still showing up. I want to thank all of you who donated, participated and that wished me well!!

    Still Time to Donate

Kristy says there is still time to donate to this event.  You can either contact Kristy Martin through her website or donate directly via PayPal to kristy@kristy-martin.com.  Donations will be accepted until Friday, March 20.  THis donation is tax deductible as well.  Contact Kristy at the above address or through her Backcountry Riding Website and she will be happy to provide you with a recipt for use on your 2009 taxes.

Let That Be A Lesson To The Lot Of Ya!

If I was crafty enough to pipe in the background music from “Chicken Run,” by God it would be playing. Alas, I’m not in the least, so you’ll have to hum along in your head. Or aloud, who are we to tell? (For those of you who don’t know, the title is a quote from the movie, too).

Daydreaming as I am as I write an eBook on a subject far less interesting than snowmobiling, my thoughts wandered to a few notable points. One of them was of the “five years ago, who’d have thought” variety.

    Five Years Ago Today….

As in five years ago, who’d have thought I’d be telling Bill to “go, man, go!” on a day-off Friday to go ripping it up with his buddy Bob, with me sitting at home.

Or as in, five years ago, who’d have thought my idea of celebrating and rewarding myself for a big-project finish and payout would be a new pair of Polaris snowmobile pants (note to Bill—UPS may be stopping by—and yes I know I totally could have slipped that by you and worn them for the remaindering season if I’d not just gone public with it)…. or a Saturday babysitter and treating Bill to gas and lunch at some trailside location…or some girly snowmobile stickers for my truck (note to self—finish your sticker order!); in fact five years ago I didn’t even own a truck and had no intention of doing so.

    sany0959

Paul sharing the love of the sport with son, Matt

As our other buddy Paul so LOVES to remind me, five years ago I was an un-fun, bitter wife who called herself a snow-widow and snarled every time the subject of snowmobiling came up. I had no sympathy for the “guys” when they complained that they HAD to ride this weekend because the snow might be gone by the next. I had my own ideas of what HAD to happen. I cared little for driving hours away and spending the day with my kids and in-laws so Bill could buzz around the great snowmobile state of Vermont. I cared not at all to buy another trailing arm at the tune of a cool hundred bucks, or to replace the seat and bumper that someone rode up on because it had a dent or a scratch (which reminds me, I’ve got a bumper in need of a little attention—and no it was not my fault!).

    So What Changed?

What changed was that four years ago, while I was still pregnant with our last child, Bill decided in the fall that it was time for a new sled. And I’d finally had enough. I put my foot down and told him that if he was buying a new snowmobile…..!

    sany0977

    The sled that Bill Bought

…he’d better buy two. And he did. Really with no argument, to his credit.

After that, it all changed. It’s funny thinking back now because I remember when Bill went shopping for those sleds. I’d told him something used and cheap was good enough for me. After all, up until then I’d done no real trail riding, only banging around in the fields when I was young. I’d never dare to go over thirty, so no, his old 600 XCSP was not a good idea for me.

    I Remember The Day….

    sany0956

The Sled that Bill Bought Me [giant grin :)

I remember when he came home and told me what he’d picked out for me—the Polaris 550 Pro X that I still have (because it’s a nice sled with hardly any miles because it can’t seat 4 kids—and I wouldn’t want it to). I remember telling him that was more sled than I needed, and him talking about how he’d weighed it out and wanted a sled with potential and value. I also remember him telling his friends that at least that way, when he sold it with 300 miles on it because I never rode it, it would be a nice sled with some resale value. As it turns out, he’s not always as right as he thinks he is.

    The Moral Of the Story

Today, things are quite different. Bill’s created a bit of a monster, and the germ is spreading. Since then, at least three close female friends or family members have bought sleds and caught the bug, with a number of others in the works; next year I fully expect to see Melissa in Maine with us, and no, breastfeeding a young’un is not an excuse—been there, found a way around that!

    sany0957

    Sherry has a sled!

Now, it’s not always Bill pushing for weekends out riding—I take all the credit for making him go last Sunday after all day out riding Saturday. I’ve more than doubled my 30 mph, and my sled has probably the same number of miles (or close) as Bill’s. Now, I actually care that his clutch is squeaking and might need new bushings. Now, I know that a clutch has bushings. Now, I’m signing a check and sending him back downtown so his crappy clutch doesn’t ruin my good day riding!

    sany0944

    Sarah has a sled!

Now, Paul gets to make girly whining noises as he ruffles my hair and teases me for my prior bitterness. Of course now, I’ve got little to be bitter about, save for the fact that winter only lasts a quarter of the year around here if we’re lucky. Now, I root for the bad-weather forecasts, and swear at the people who live in New England but complain about snowstorms. Now I write a snowmobile blog for women for crying out loud! There’s no way I could have predicted THAT five years ago!

    sany0962

Gus has a sled! But he's decidedly not a girl, and that's not actually his sled, it's Bill's.

    sany0949

    An even happier couple now!

The other great bene is that now Bill and I have finally found something in common. Today he comes home from the local Polaris dealer and hands me the new Polaris Rush brochure, and we’re both licking our lips. What’s even funnier is that I’d already checked it out online and watched the virtual ride while he was downtown. Much as we enjoy rides out with a big crew, we also enjoy a few hours’ dash together alone, just the two of us. We’ve found some common ground, and we’re imposing our much-loved sport on our kids. Last year when we visited the local Polaris dealer with the intention of buying the boys the 120, and I saw that hot-pink one sitting there, an old, familiar refrain sounded out:

    sany0918

    And so we did!

“If you’re coming home with one, you’d better come home with two!”

    Take A Friend Riding?

The big push by the International Snowmobile Manufacturer’s Association has been their “Take a Friend Riding” campaign. Take a friend riding? How about take a wife!? (girlfriend, sister, significant other….) I’ll tell you all now that’s a surefire way to grow the sport and get yourself out of the doghouse in the process. And put a smile on a lady’s face :)

    Readers Have Questions

I recently received this question from a reader, Rachel. Rachel is new to riding and is looking for some advice regarding riding gear.  Here’s her question and my answer, but maybe you have something more or better to suggest?  Please leave your advice for Rachel below in the comments (and if you have any, send them my way–see the contact page to find out where!)

    The Question

I have a few questions about snowmobile gear that I was hoping you could help with. My boyfriend loves to ride and introduced me to his love last winter. I bundled up in everything I had and some of his stuff too in attempts to stay warm all day, without sweating. I am having the hardest time finding gear specifically designed for a woman, especially a small woman. I am only 5′3″ and about 110lbs. Can you recommend brands or specific products that will keep me warm without adding too much bulk, and maybe even look attractive in? I specifically need boots that will be warm enough, and tall enough to keep the snow out when I get stuck…I am still learning how to manuver through the wash out.

    The Answer

The industry has gotten a lot better with attractive & fitting women’s clothing. Any of the sled manufacturers/dealers will have name-brand stuff that should be well suited and warm. Not sure what you’re riding or if you have any particular preference but if you go to a Polaris dealer, etc they should be happy to help. I’d check eBay too because I know one of my girlfriends gets some nice name-brand stuff for reasonable prices.

This is a good time of year to check the dealers, too, because they’ll often clear out last year’s styles.

If you don’t care about the names, and the price tags they carry, check out parts and supply catalogs. Dennis Kirk is a good one and they were featuring some nice women’s styles on the cover this year, getting a little more in tune with that market. Another one we often shop with decent pricing is Shade Tree Powersports (should be able to Google either of those).

I have to say I’m not huge into name tags and don’t usually pay the extra cost. I ride with a good pair of Sorel (Sorrel?) boots, bib ski pants (although some will argue to go with the ones made for riding because they have dual layers where you might get wet), and a Columbia 3-season jacket and gloves. The 3 season jacket is nice because I have the opttion of layers when it’s warmer riding. I’ll tell you that coat has kept me SO WARM. I’ve almost never been cold, and never seriously so, when we were riding–even when my hub and male counterparts were. And that says something because I’m ALWAYS cold, indoors and out.

Gearing Up To Ride In The Cyber World

Seems the chill in the air is bringing us all out of our heat-induced comas.  Everyone is getting ready online and off, waiting for big huge dumps of snow (glorious snow!!!) and gearing up their blogs and snowmobile sites.  So today it’s time to weed through some emails and send you on your way to other great sled sites of interest (at least, the ones who were kind enough to email or feature me lately :) ).

    Rippin’ Round The Web

    Kristy-Martin.com

I posted the other day about Kristy Martin’s new site.  DO NOT  forget to stop by.  She might be the coolest sled chick I [kind of] know (duh–after me of course, I’m that conceited :)  just kidding).  At the very least, she definitely has bragging rights to the coolest sled-chick pictures.  I barely have any of myself, as I’m the one always carries the camera, unless Sarah is with us (don’t listen to what I said earlier Sarah, you’re the coolest sledchick I know).  They wouldn’t be nearly so adventurous anyway.  But hey–if you have cool pics of a sled chick riding, send them in and give her a run for her money.  And by that (Men get your heads out of the gutter) I mean REAL pictures like Kristy’s–of REAL women riding REAL SNOWMOBILES.  On snow.  IN winter.  Clad in weather-protective clothing with freeze ratings and everything.  No bikini shots.

To get back on subject, here are the pages you have to visit at Kristy’s site:

There’s the Home Page,  of course, but pay particular attention to some great events and causes on this page.  You really want to read more about Kristy while you’re there, too.

    ZenWaiter

We can never forget our good buddy Zen, who pops in from time to time to keep me motivated by featuring the SledChix blog on his site (click on this week’s featured snowmobile blog and see where you come back to :) ).  By the way, he’ll be at NOVI next week to, so give him a shout if you see him!  He’ll be the loud, hairy Canadian I’d guess LOL.  He’s doing 4 shows with snowtrailstv.com on PBS this winter, which I cannot wait to see!  Zen has a much more comprehensive list of snowmobile shows than I have, be sure to check that out.  He’s got his own page full o’ podcasts, and hey!  Zen blogs, too.  Read it here: Zenwaiter blog.  One day maybe he’ll even come by and explain that name…

    SkinnyMoose’s Own CamoGirl

She’s not a sledder, but she’s a girl with a gun so don’t go pi$$ing off CamoGirl. She does have a love of the outdoors to rival any girly sledhead or guy, and from time to time she features women snowmobilers, as she did in this post last week.  Thanks for the heads up!

Okay I THINK that’s all of you for now, but since I know you are all still groggy from the long summer and still coming back to life, I know that more will be coming up soon.  Do tell!  No fair keeping secrets, share the link and we’ll share the love.  Send your website or event, or Kitty, maybe your latest snowmobile shirts and products (with pics)?

Winter is a comin’!  It’s time to come back to life!

    Send it all to sledderchick@gmail.com

How Do You Get A Girl To Ride A Snowmobile?

I was recently inspired by a post I saw on Bill Anderson’s Muskoka Outdoors blog in which he attempted to give guys a helping hand getting their wives and girlfriends (preferably not at the same time) into their fishing boats. His list goes a little something like this:

    1. “That’s not a fishing platform in the front, honey, it’s a tanning deck with optimal tanning angles.”
    2. “I think Brad Pitt has a cottage on this lake.”
    3. “There will be plenty of time to…[read the rest of the list here]“

How To Get A Woman To Ride A Snowmobile

I thought perhaps you guys out there could use a list of your own to get those girls riding with, or better, alongside you.  And I expanded Bill’s list to give you twice as many (cause I know you need twice as much help).

    10. I could We could ride twice as often if you snowmobiled, too.

    9. Unless we get communicators, no one can talk to you while we’re riding.

    8. I promise you won’t get cold.

    7. I’ll warm you up when you get cold (cause guys need incentives, too).

    6. I’ll buy you a new sledding outfit before we go.

    5. I promise I won’t go too fast.

    4. I promise we can go fast.

    3. There’s no room for the kids to come.

    2. You can drive.

    1. I’ll get you your own sled!

Got a better idea?  Do share it!  Comments are open so tell me…how do you get a woman to ride a snowmobile?

    Time For Some Laughs

Just to prove that I'm a blond...

I’ve added this picture just so you could see that I really am blonde….

I can do this because I am a blonde. Kind of like how certain ethnic group members/cultures take liberties to ridicule themselves even though it’s discrimination when others do it? But really, if you can’t laugh at yourself….

    Funny Blog Joke

There is a rather entertaining blonde joke here. More than anything, though, I’m linking to it first to prove that not only blondes will aprreciate it, and secondly to prove that there are people more blonde than I. Go read it, but be sure to come back and tell me how you make out…later I’ll tell you how I did, but I’ve probably already given too much away…

Time for another funny blonde joke.

No Wonder Kristy Wants Winter Back!

I admit it, Kristy Martin has far better photos of actual sledding from last season than I do–and she was nice enough to send them to me!

Check out the awesome riding Kristy & Company had in Tahoe last year.

(At least the first and third are from Tahoe, the rest I’m not entirely sure; Kristy?)

Kristy Martin’s Awesome ‘07/’08 Snowmobiling Season

    Kristine Martin Tahoe snowmobiling pics

In her email Kristy said she missed Winter already, even though Spring has just found her neck of the woods. I feel her pain–with riding like that it’s no wonder she’s doing her snow dance already!

Got last season pics to share? Send them to me! Sledderchick@gmail.com.

Be sure to see everyone’s snowmobile pics! SUBSCRIBE to this snowmobiling blog!

    A Crazy Freestylin’ SledChick

Okay I admit I’m still too chicken for this, but this link was passed in the comments a couple weeks back by John Smallwood.  Have fun watching this YouTube snowmobiling video of Katie learning freestyle.  She does look like she’s enjoying herself!

When Guys and Girls Ride Together

Not sure who Snowbuggie is, but she sent us a fun comic strip link.  Go here and find out what guys and girls are really thinking when they ride together.  You can even buy the rights to the comic strip (I think that’s what they’re selling) for $16.00.  (For $16.00 I wouldn’t doubt we’ll see this on a Sledderwear shirt soon!)

Snowbuggie says this comic reminds her of riding with her husband.  Oh, and that she also loves him and respects him :).

Snowbuggie, methinks it’s time to get your own sled and join in the fun!!

Thanks for the links & laughs!

Tell Snow Goer What You REALLY Think About Them

Since I’m a subscriber to SnowGoer, I got an email from them today asking me to fill in a quick survey, which you might get in your inbox, too if you subscribe.  Normally I don’t have the time for this stuff, but today I bit.  Why?  Because I think the interests of women snowmobilers are underserved in snowmobile magazines, and I thought offering my opinion might give me something of interest to read throughout the year.  I mean really, I’m not about to read the bit to learn how to adjust my own suspension when I don’t even fill my own gas tank!!

Probably my little opinion alone won’t make much of a difference, but collectively we might have an impact, especially as it seems snowmobile manufacturers are getting the message that girls ride, too (and spend a lot of $$ on shiny snowmobiles and matching outfits).  Proof positive–did you know Polaris unveiled a new pink snowmobile for grown-up girls this year?  Must be we’ve been asserting our influence…and succeeding!
