Let That Be A Lesson To The Lot Of Ya!

If I was crafty enough to pipe in the background music from “Chicken Run,” by God it would be playing. Alas, I’m not in the least, so you’ll have to hum along in your head. Or aloud, who are we to tell? (For those of you who don’t know, the title is a quote from the movie, too).

Daydreaming as I am as I write an eBook on a subject far less interesting than snowmobiling, my thoughts wandered to a few notable points. One of them was of the “five years ago, who’d have thought” variety.

    Five Years Ago Today….

As in five years ago, who’d have thought I’d be telling Bill to “go, man, go!” on a day-off Friday to go ripping it up with his buddy Bob, with me sitting at home.

Or as in, five years ago, who’d have thought my idea of celebrating and rewarding myself for a big-project finish and payout would be a new pair of Polaris snowmobile pants (note to Bill—UPS may be stopping by—and yes I know I totally could have slipped that by you and worn them for the remaindering season if I’d not just gone public with it)…. or a Saturday babysitter and treating Bill to gas and lunch at some trailside location…or some girly snowmobile stickers for my truck (note to self—finish your sticker order!); in fact five years ago I didn’t even own a truck and had no intention of doing so.

    sany0959

Paul sharing the love of the sport with son, Matt

As our other buddy Paul so LOVES to remind me, five years ago I was an un-fun, bitter wife who called herself a snow-widow and snarled every time the subject of snowmobiling came up. I had no sympathy for the “guys” when they complained that they HAD to ride this weekend because the snow might be gone by the next. I had my own ideas of what HAD to happen. I cared little for driving hours away and spending the day with my kids and in-laws so Bill could buzz around the great snowmobile state of Vermont. I cared not at all to buy another trailing arm at the tune of a cool hundred bucks, or to replace the seat and bumper that someone rode up on because it had a dent or a scratch (which reminds me, I’ve got a bumper in need of a little attention—and no it was not my fault!).

    So What Changed?

What changed was that four years ago, while I was still pregnant with our last child, Bill decided in the fall that it was time for a new sled. And I’d finally had enough. I put my foot down and told him that if he was buying a new snowmobile…..!

    sany0977

    The sled that Bill Bought

…he’d better buy two. And he did. Really with no argument, to his credit.

After that, it all changed. It’s funny thinking back now because I remember when Bill went shopping for those sleds. I’d told him something used and cheap was good enough for me. After all, up until then I’d done no real trail riding, only banging around in the fields when I was young. I’d never dare to go over thirty, so no, his old 600 XCSP was not a good idea for me.

    I Remember The Day….

    sany0956

The Sled that Bill Bought Me [giant grin :)

I remember when he came home and told me what he’d picked out for me—the Polaris 550 Pro X that I still have (because it’s a nice sled with hardly any miles because it can’t seat 4 kids—and I wouldn’t want it to). I remember telling him that was more sled than I needed, and him talking about how he’d weighed it out and wanted a sled with potential and value. I also remember him telling his friends that at least that way, when he sold it with 300 miles on it because I never rode it, it would be a nice sled with some resale value. As it turns out, he’s not always as right as he thinks he is.

    The Moral Of the Story

Today, things are quite different. Bill’s created a bit of a monster, and the germ is spreading. Since then, at least three close female friends or family members have bought sleds and caught the bug, with a number of others in the works; next year I fully expect to see Melissa in Maine with us, and no, breastfeeding a young’un is not an excuse—been there, found a way around that!

    sany0957

    Sherry has a sled!

Now, it’s not always Bill pushing for weekends out riding—I take all the credit for making him go last Sunday after all day out riding Saturday. I’ve more than doubled my 30 mph, and my sled has probably the same number of miles (or close) as Bill’s. Now, I actually care that his clutch is squeaking and might need new bushings. Now, I know that a clutch has bushings. Now, I’m signing a check and sending him back downtown so his crappy clutch doesn’t ruin my good day riding!

    sany0944

    Sarah has a sled!

Now, Paul gets to make girly whining noises as he ruffles my hair and teases me for my prior bitterness. Of course now, I’ve got little to be bitter about, save for the fact that winter only lasts a quarter of the year around here if we’re lucky. Now, I root for the bad-weather forecasts, and swear at the people who live in New England but complain about snowstorms. Now I write a snowmobile blog for women for crying out loud! There’s no way I could have predicted THAT five years ago!

    sany0962

Gus has a sled! But he's decidedly not a girl, and that's not actually his sled, it's Bill's.

    sany0949

    An even happier couple now!

The other great bene is that now Bill and I have finally found something in common. Today he comes home from the local Polaris dealer and hands me the new Polaris Rush brochure, and we’re both licking our lips. What’s even funnier is that I’d already checked it out online and watched the virtual ride while he was downtown. Much as we enjoy rides out with a big crew, we also enjoy a few hours’ dash together alone, just the two of us. We’ve found some common ground, and we’re imposing our much-loved sport on our kids. Last year when we visited the local Polaris dealer with the intention of buying the boys the 120, and I saw that hot-pink one sitting there, an old, familiar refrain sounded out:

    sany0918

    And so we did!

“If you’re coming home with one, you’d better come home with two!”

    Take A Friend Riding?

The big push by the International Snowmobile Manufacturer’s Association has been their “Take a Friend Riding” campaign. Take a friend riding? How about take a wife!? (girlfriend, sister, significant other….) I’ll tell you all now that’s a surefire way to grow the sport and get yourself out of the doghouse in the process. And put a smile on a lady’s face :)

    Kristy’s Colorado Sled Report

Kristy Martin was kind enough to send us an update from Colorado–with some VERY cool pics!  Frankly, I’m jealous.  I’ve ridden some beautiful places, but nothing to compare to this!

    Colorado Sled Report, Courtesy Kristy-Martin.com

    1-27-09-5Kristy’s sled report:

The snow started a bit late this year compared to last year, but we are in full swing now.  We went to the pre X-games show at a local lodge here, then we hit the X-games for a great night to watch Tucker win the Sno-x.  Riding has been good, yesterday was the best day so far this year.  We got a call at 6:45am Tuesday morning to go help search for the 3 missing guys from Sunday night.  We got our day planned out, picked up two other riders and then got word that they had found the guys walking and they were alright!!  THANK THE LORD!!!  So we are packed up ready to ride, what should we do now??  You guessed it, we went out and rode.  It had been raining and snowing in the lower areas of 6,000-8,000 feet most of the weekend.  So we get to the trail head, it is cloudy, cold and windy.  We get going and about noon the clouds open up.  All I can say is WOW, the day was now almost perfect.  So we were so thankful for the day to be out playing in the snow, we forgot to take any action shots of us riding, but got some great scenery shots.  It is snowing again today, so maybe our tracks will be covered up for the weekend of more DEEP snow riding!!

Thanks for the update, Kristy!  Feel free to drop in any time!

Speaking of dropping in, anyone else who’d like to share, do feel free (see the contact page for details), and don’t forget to drop in on Kristy at her backcountry riding website!

    Kristy’s Colorado SledPix Gallery

Bet you wish you had views like this right now!  I’m thinking Bill is going to have to finally take me closer to Katahdin this year.  I feel inspired.

    Revisiting The Pink Ribbon Riders

You might remember my posting about the Pink Ribbon Riders last year.  This is the 501 (c) 3 non-profit group of snowmobilers, ATV riders, and motrocyclers raising funds through tours, events, community events, and product sales and donations to support men and women diagnosed with breast cancer.  They enjoy a great level of support from people throughout the sport, including the Winter X Games and snow-cross riders.  They came to mind again as I was on the search for pink snowmobiling stickers to girl up my truck (so Bill stops threatening to commandeer it), and it seemed a good time to draw some attention to this most deserving of charities and events again.

    Support The Pink Ribbon Riders

pinkribbonridersThere are many ways to support this great cause.  You can attend, volunteer at, or sponsor an event, donate, or buy stickers, decals, clothing, gas cards, or products, or help spread the word! Of course you can join a ride, which I’d love to do one day if ever one comes close enough to me.

To save money, there is no online ordering at this time, but you can download and print the catalog and order sheet and mail in your order to the Riders.

To learn more, search the site, or get on board, visit the Pink Ribbon Riders website.

See US & CA Snow Depth Totals Online!

I just found a very cool tool through the Massachusetts SAM website (Snowmobile Association of Massachusetts).  It is a satellite map produced by the US Air Force that gives snow depth totals for the US and Canada.  Very cool.  I’m not sure how often it updates, but the current map is dated for yesterday, January 25.  Maybe this is old news to some of you, but it’s all new to me, and sure to become a page I bookmark!

Snow Depth Maps For US, Canada, & Northeast US & New England

usaf-snow-depthsTo find the map, go here:

    USAF Snow Depth Map

You can also access the link on this page of the SAM website:

Snowmobile Association of Massachusetts Links Page

    (look under Conditions/Weather)

There is also a link to the NOAA Snow Depth map for the Northeast (courtesy of the Northeast River Forecast Center in Taunton, MA) which covers all of New England and New York and a bit into Canada.

Both maps can be zoomed for a more accurate total of your target sledding area.

    Man Is My Backside Sore!

As for us, we had a weekend packed with riding–finally!  On Saturday we rode the trails of mainly the Coldbrook Snowmobile Club (in Central Massachusetts) and North into Templeton, Winchendon, and Royalston to Birch Hill Dam–which happens to be my hometown.  We rode within about 10 minutes of my parent’s house.  In need of maps to see how we can get any closer–anyone who has one please contact me via the conatct page!

On Sunday we rode the brandy new trails of the Ware River Snowmobile Club–a club formed just over the past couple of years.  I’ve got some great pics of their fresh and very nicely cared for trails, which I hope to get up over the next couple of days.

For Massachusetts, which does not get the snowfall of Maine or have the widespread sport support that Maine enjoys, the riding was quite good.  Predictably, the trails were busy and ridden hard over the weekend, so the going in spots was bumpy and rough, but it was a great weekend and no complaints!  The clubs are doing a good job keeping up for the most part.  Rumors are that Coldbrook is having some trouble with their groomers, doing what they can, but Ware River is faithfully maintaining their new system and doing a great job of it!  I have to say (and I shouldn’t because I’d rather be selfish and keep the traffic off our trails :) ) that Ware River is comparatively untouched and a very nice ride, so if you haven’t checked out this newest SAM addition, now’s the time.

We’ve got a sizable snow predicted for Wednesday all day (as if we needed another snow day–but I’ll take the snow!) so by this weekend if the temperatures hold (which so far it apears they will) the riding should be stellar!

Here’s to the snow and great riding!

How was your ride?  Your trails?  Share below or email me (see contact page) and let everyone know!

From The Depths Of Despair & Back Again

It seems I’ve been entirely uninspired these last several months.  In part that was due to my extreme busy-ness with my day job as a freelance writer–not a bad thing at all, but sometimes makes for a dull sledchick.  Of course, in part that was due to our warm weather months; always a depressing time of year–when the sled payments don’t stop but the fun does!  December was pretty much of a wash after being a full week with absolutely no power and services due to the big New England ice storm.  It was a step back in time that brought normal life to a halt, but it sure was beautiful…

    sany0856

    Beautiful destruction

    sany0857

sany0859This last one is the view I was treated to when returning home to my dark house one night.  Kind of made it a little worth it….

January wasn’t much better, since we then had snow but my sled was 6 hours away in Maine!  I TOLD Bill we should bring them back when we were up there for Thanksgiving!

My spirits lifted last week with the promise of a long weekend of sledding.  Unfortunately, when we arrived we found out that our keys had been–shall we be polite and say “misplaced” (and not by us)–I guess we’ll leave it at that.  “Miscommunication” (polite, again, not my usual style but it keeps the peace) led me to believe that persons knew generally where the keys were.  Unfortunately I found out too late (as in, after all the dealers were closed for the weekend) that no, in fact, they had not been located.  Long, frustrating, angering story short, the whole weekend of riding was lost until Monday morning when the local dealer opened up again and we could get keys.  That left us with no one around to watch the kids, and so we only managed a 2 hour ride Monday night before having to return early, early Tuesday morning.

The moral of the story is:

    1. Don’t leave your keys with anyone but yourself.  (I’m fashioning mine into a necklace.  Bill’s afraid I just might do it!)
    2. If there is any question, get new keys as soon as possible.  As it turns out, they’re only about $8 each, so definitely worth the investment.  Much better than spending $200 on registrations and at least that much traveling only to not be able to ride when you get there!
    3. Bring your sleds home like your wife said and you don’t have to worry about it!!!!!!!!

We did get to do a little banging around and the kids got to ride (after the temps warmed up from -40!).

    sany0890

    Can I come in?

And when we did get out, even though it was only a couple of hours, the riding was incredible!  We’d had 10 fresh inches of snow and none of the groomers had made it out yet–nor any other sledders!  We were riding on a solid base topped with nearly a foot of fresh, virgin snow.  It doesn’t get any better than that!  Apparently, someone somewhere figured we deserved to be thrown a bit of a bone.

sany0898sany0906sany0911sany0921Now, we’re all back home, with keys, with sleds, with snow, and my Massachusetts snomobile registrations and SAM stickers just arrived.  We’ve got weekend plans with my best girl to ride, so life is good again.  Hopefully my mood will improve and that snowy muse will continue to inpsire.  Until then, it’s off to the trails!

    sany0916

Still love Maine, but she's back where she belongs now....
