Pearson Sidewinder

Looking for a great womens or youth bow? Look no further than the Pearson sidewinder for a great little bow. First the bow has an angled grip to help keep the string off new archers arms, is light weight and high performanced. I shot this bow in the shop today with a 300gr arrow and got 239fps at 24″ 51lbs, 259fps at 28″ 51lbs, and 195 at 22″ 40lb. This is the fastest bow I have found at the short 22″ draw that my daughter shoots. It is around 30-40 fps faster than the Hoyt banshee,Hoyt Trykon Jr,Diamond edge and Mathews Ignition at 22″ and 40lbs. It has a great looking camo job and the finish is flawless. Backed by Pearsons lifetime for any owner warranty you cant go wrong with this great little bow.

Some bow comparisons

I had a customer last night wanting a fast bow at a light draw weight, I wasnt at the shop so I couldnt help Cari out. So today I did a little testing to get the velocity of some 60lb bows set at 55lbs shooting a 280gr Goldtip ultralite arrow. All the bows were set at the same weight and had a 29″ draw length except the Diamond Liberty which was a 30″ as I had no 29″ mod for it. The results are as follows with a 5 shot average on the speeds through my ProChrono.

Hoyt Vetrix 297fps

Bowtech Gaurdian 290fps

Diamond liberty (30″) 293fps

Mathews Drenalin 292fps

Evotek American hunter 263fps

Evotek Impact 263 fps (yes they had the same speed and is not a typo)

I also got my hand on a 70lb 29″ Evotek Stalker today and it shot 290 @65lb with a 330gr Lightspeed 400.

Hope this info helps on picking a bow.

Sandhill Crane Fajitas

1. Shoot cranes(my favorite part)

2. Filet the breast

3. Season with Fiesta Fajita Seasoning and meat tenderizer.

4. Grill breasts med.rare(this is important). If you overcook they will become extremely chewy and tough.

I usually grill them on a hot plate with my onions and peppers.

They truly are the “ribeyes in the sky”.

That time of year

Well here it is that time of year. The busy season!! We are getting swamped with arrow orders, refletch, repairs and new sales. With me pushing firelanes in the morning and in the shop in the evening it doesnt leave time to do much else. But Saturday will kick off the hunting season here in TX and I plan on being out and shooting some birds. Gonna actually be in OK instead of TX this weekend though.

My friend Dave has tons of birds just south of OK city. We are going to shoot some in the morning and fish in the evening and go hang some stands on Sunday. Our big company dove hunt will be on Sept 21 and we should have about 50 people at that one. It is in Elcampo with Waterfowl Specialties, they sure enough can put you on some whitewings and geese, not to mention some big trout out of Matagorda. Last year 33 people killed 333 doves in about 3 hours or so, not to mention the beer and BBQ.

I have got to find time and run and put up my popup blinds on red branch and change the card in my cuddeback. I know I have some good bucks on film, just have to make the time to go and get them. I prefer to go in the middle of the day as I dont want to put any pressure at all on the deer. So maybe I can post some pics if I ever go get it!! One more month till we can start flinging sticks at these whitetails, or bullets on our level 3 mld club. Can’t wait to get a cool snap and get out there and get after them and also get all my control burning done till next year. It looks to be a great year with all the rain we have had and should see some really nice bucks come out of the woodwork this year. Especially in the hill country and south Tx where they have had loads of rain. My partner has already got a bunch of pics of some bucks we were seeing last year and if one of them steps out I am gonna let Ashlyn lay him on the ground. These are a couple of really nice 8pts that are in the 5 1/2 yo range. Perfect for her first big buck, I have only let her shoot does and some small culls up until this year. Didnt want to spoil her from the get go!!

Have a good weekend and open the seasons with a bang, or maybe a couple of cases of them!

Put some ARCH in your Archery

I have been outside all evening watching perfectly tuned and flying arrows hit exactly where I want at 50 and 60yds. I am not talking about trying to shoot critters at this range though elk and caribou are taken with a bow at these ranges alot. I have no problem taking a long shot on an open country animal, but whitetails are a totally different story.

It sure is fun to watch those long shots arch in there, even though they dont arch near as much as they use to when shooting the older bows. Take a recurve or longbow though and also back up to 40 or 50 yds and you can sure enough have fun watching the arrow heading towards the target.

Shooting at longer distances all the time also makes it a lot easier to hit the closer shots. When you can shoot 3-5″ 60yd groups you had better not shoot at the same spot much at 20yds, or you will be destroying some arrows.

Get out there and stretch the range out and have a little fun, if you havent stretched out before, make sure you have a good backstop till you get your sights on and get on target.

Look out deer hunters

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Deer hunting could be a dangerous endeavor for men with heart disease or risk factors for it, research findings suggest.

In a study of 25 middle-aged male deer hunters, researchers found that the activities inherent to hunting — like walking over rough terrain, shooting an animal and dragging its carcass — sent the men’s heart rates up significantly.

In some cases, this led to potentially dangerous heart-rhythm disturbances, or diminished oxygen supply to the heart.

Of the 25 hunters, 17 had established coronary heart disease, while the rest had risk factors such as being overweight, smoking or having high blood pressure or cholesterol.

The findings suggest that for men like these, hunting could boost the risk of heart attack or cardiac arrest.

Susan Haapaniemi and colleagues at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oaks, Michigan, report the findings in the American Journal of Cardiology.

For the study, the researchers outfitted each man with a portable monitor that continuously recorded his heart’s electrical activity during a day of deer hunting. For comparison, the men also had their hearts monitored as they exercised on a treadmill on a separate day.

In general, the researchers found, deer hunting put the men’s hearts under more strain than the treadmill did. Ten men exceeded the maximum heart rate they logged on the treadmill, and several showed potentially dangerous heart responses to hunting that they did not show during the treadmill test.

Three men had signs of impeded blood flow to the heart during hunting, but not on the treadmill. Similarly, three of the men with heart disease had heart-rhythm abnormalities while hunting that did not show up on the treadmill test.

The combination of physical exertion, adrenaline rush and the stress of rough terrain and cold weather may explain the “excessive cardiac demands” seen with hunting, according to Haapaniemi’s team.

What’s more, they point out, most of the men in the study were taking part in an exercise program to treat their heart disease, or were regularly physically active. Hunting could be an even greater strain on the heart in men who are usually sedentary, the researchers n

Burning a little powder

This morning me and Ash decided it was time for a little change. We have been gettng some pics of a big buck that we nicknamed the martian  a couple of years ago and have decided to let ash take this year. So we broke out the shooting sticks and she proceeded to put some rounds down range instead of the usual arrows.

First we loaded up some 308 with a cast 170gr fp with a gas check loaded over a mild load of 10gr of unique since she wanted to shoot my little ruger 77rsi. She went through 20rds in no time flat plunking the bullets right where they were supposed to go while shooting off some shooting sticks for the first time. She will be huntng out of popup blinds for the first time this year and their isnt much to rest the rifle on so the sticks come in handy.

Nest we broke out her moms 257 roberts and she shot 10rds of full power ammo through it and was really enjoying herself. She says that was the one she wanted to shoot her buck with. A 100gr nosler partition over some 4350 for about 3100fps will make short work out of the old martian with a solid shot.

Next we took it easy and she got the 22-250 warm just shooting some rem factory 55gr loads I had laying around. Then she finished  up with the little marlin 17vls shooting up most of my ammo in the process and just now came in here wanting me to get the 22 out for her to shoot simce I had a couple thousand rounds for it. I have created a monster!!! Just like I planned it!

I burned up some 32mag ammo through my super single six and put some through my 9mm Kahr cw9 that I carry daily. Doesnt hurt to practice as much as you can with your carry gun, you never know when you are gonna need it. I have to say mine is mostly used on snakes and putting a coup de grace on big game. Though I have taken hogs with my 1911 45 while carrying it. A 230gr hollowpoint will put a hog down no problem with a shot to the boiler room.

Felt good to shoot the guns a little simce spending so much time shooting the bow and not burning much powder this year which is unusual for me as I shot a thousand rounds a month in most years past, mainly through handguns.

This is a collection of stories from the legendary Jim Dougherty, who is a member of the bowhunters hall of fame and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Fred Bear, Howard Hill, Ben Pearson and others. This includes stories from California to Africa and every where in between. Lessons learned as well as a lifetime of bowhunting memories are shared in his unique and wonderful voice.
