Doe Fever by Ashlyn Wagstaff

It was a nice warm evening. Dad and I had been sitting around camp and talking. Dad said” You ready to get in the stand?” Dad asked.”Yeah. Let’s go.” I answered. We got in the truck and stopped half way to the stand. I asked Dad” Which stand are we going to?” He answered” The Doe Hole.” When we shut the stand door and got quiet we didn’t have to wait long before a whole group of does came in. I picked out a big doe that was leading the group. Dad got the gun up to the window of the stand then I got adjusted putting the stock directly on my shoulder then looking through the sights putting the cross hairs on the shoulder. BOOM!” Went the 357mag. The doe I was shooting at crumbled to the shot. Dad and I high-fived. “ Another deer in the fridge.” I said.

The freezer is now full!!

07-08-hunting-season-021.jpg07-08-hunting-season-001.jpg07-08-hunting-season-002.jpgWe have been hunting pretty hard on the weekends for the last 8 weeks and have managed to fill the freezer up. the tally is

3 spikes

1 5pt cull

1 17″ 8pt

7 does

8 were taken by bow and the other 4 with the rifle. we still have 4 left to take on our 2 leases and will probably wait till the end of dec. for them. Ashlyn is going to get one with her bow, she doesnt even want to hunt with the rifle anymore. I have no doubts she can score in the hill country. She is shooting great and has her weight up to 44lbs. She has came a long way in a year, last christmas she was at 25lbs. Pretty good for a 10yo. Heres a few pics. Enjoy

Opening weekend

Well it finally got here and was a little slow with the full moon and 90+ degree heat. We seen one doe saturday morning, had ants eat us up in the ground blind and got good and hot. Our buddy Dale did manage to kill a sow and 3 pigs sat. morning and would have had more if his gun wouldnt have malfunctioned on him. We have a lot of hogs this year! That evening me and Ashlyn went and got in another stand and hadnt been there just a few minutes when we realized it had red wasps in it!! She got stung once in the leg and we abandoned ship and went to another stand. About 6:30 we had 2 young 8pts and a 7 pt come out. They were only 2 1/2 yo deer so we just watched them till they left. At about 7pm I noticed a larger buck coming down the lane, after watching him for about 15minutes with light running out, I decided to let Ashlyn take the shot since he was at least 3 1/2 yo and had 8pts up top but no brow tines. She got on him but shot just a hair low missing him clean. I couldnt believe she missed, she never misses. She was shooting 410 hulls the other day. Oh well, if you hunt long

Miranda Scores

I wish I had a pic, but I dont. I got Miranda to start shooting a bow back in July. At first she was scared of it and didnt want for the string to hit her arm. With a little instruction though she was fine and shooting great in no time. She didnt want to bowhunt when she first started shooting, but after some 3d shoots and starting to watch the outdoor channel she was pumped. I took her hog hunting in August and she killed a small sow and was hooked, and couldnt wait for deer season.

Well deer season opened this past Saturday and Miranda was perched 12ft up in a double ladder stand, and it wasnt long before a doe ambled by. The deer was standing at 20yds when Miranda released a Beman ICS Jr arrow from her 40lb Diamond Edge bow. The shot was a little forward and hit the deer in the shoulder, but the razor sharp 85gr magnus stinger punched right through the shoulder and stuck in the off side shoulder.  The doe only went 50yds before going down for good.

It is a great feeling to hook another bowhunter for life!! She told her husband to hang up her rifle because she didnt need it anymore.

Quick Hunt

Couldnt stand to wait until this Sat. for the season to open, so went hog hunting. I have had them coming in good for a while at our main deer lease and havent been fooling with them so I thought it would be a good evening to go and try one of the New NAP Hellrazor broadheads out. Well I guess the full moon has them eating at night, didnt see a one. Oh well that why its called huntin. Had a good evening though and am ready to deer hunt this weekend. Have both bows ready to go as well as a couple of rifles too. Really like the new Hellrazor, it shoots great out of fast bows and is easy to resharpen. I had the one I had been shooting shaving again in just a couple of minutes with the diamond stone and some leather. Can’t wait to try it on game. Hopefully the week will go by quick and we will have some good pics and stories next week.

 Good huntin

Weekend Action

Well I knew I had the season started off right when I killed the first dove of the year with the first shot. I was hunting in SW OK near the town of Snyder with my buddy Dave. We started off the morning shooting limits in about an hour and a half. Not bad for having not shot in several months.

Dave surprised me when we went to Walmart and bought some steel BB’s. I asked what they were for and he informed me that we had a Sunday morning appointment with some resident greater canadian geese. We were hunting with SMOKINGFOWL outfitters out of Elgin,OK. We left the house at 4:30 and met the owner and guides Cody and Shane. We then headed for the fields and started putting out full body decoys. Next Cody had us take some camo burlap and tie strings up and down the length of the burlap. In those strings we tied handfulls of wheat stubble to make our little guilli blankets. We got set up and under the burlap and it wasnt long and the first birds were in the air. 3 big geese came in low and slow and met the wrath of the steel and hevishot. 2 of those birds were banded, then we had 2 more land in the dekes and took them as well with both of them being banded as well. Next a group of 4 came in and none left with 2 of them also being banded. Can you believe 6 banded birds out of 8 killed. That fill mine and Daves limit and we picked up and went to the dove field by his house in Anadarko and limited out in about 30min, hot and heavy shooting after jumping hundreds of birds out of the group of trees where they we resting after getting full in the plowed field.

We used the evening to catch up on some sleep as we stayed up all friday night and had a short nap and stayed up late sat. night as well. We were in the field by daylight monday morning and had another limit each by 8:30. We then went and got some breakfast and I packed up my stuff for the long drive home.

I stopped by the hunting club to get the card out of my cuddebak and to put up a popup blind so the deer would get used to it. What a great way to start off the season
