Charlotte Motorist urged to watch for deer while driving

According to some NC agencies, Union and Mecklenburg Counties here in NC are among the most dangerous in the state when it comes to deer collisions. It appears they are blaming the severe drought this year, claiming this can cause the deer to travel farther than usual for food and water sources.Â
This years drought is a bad one to say the least. One of my hunting spots has an old pond which used to be full of water up until the dam broke some years back and has since been left unrepaired. However, this pond has always held 4-5 feet of water for the local wildlife to enjoy. This isn’t the case this year. The pond has merely become a large puddle and if we don’t get some rain in the next week or so, I suspect it’ll be bone dry. The nearest creek with any water left is some miles away and the next nearest water source is some local ponds inside cattle pastures across a main road. It’s one thing to need rain to fulfill farmers crops, personal gardens, etc., etc., etc., but, we’re down to the “nitty gritty” here in parts of the south. The wildlife is hurting for water sources. Hopefully some rain will push through this area in the near future. You can learn more about deer collision statistics here in NC at this link.
