Sox 08, ‘09, ‘10???

Boston Red Sox: Was there really any doubt the Sox were going to win the Series? They had been the best team in baseball all season and showed it in a dominating 7 game span that included the ALCS. The real question is could this be the start of something special? The jury is still out, but with young players like Josh Beckett, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jonathan Papelpon, Kevin Youkilis, and Jon Lester  this team is loaded and ready for a long run…

Game 2:

The Sox are like a central plains t-storm. It starts to build, the sky turns, the winds pick up and as the afternoon turns to evening it hits…

Boston hitters watch, they wait, they learn and then they attack. It was clear starting in the 4th inning that they were on to Jimenez and now he’s gone and they are up 2-1. I have seen this before with the Yankees in the late 90’s, same approach, same idea and it is looking like same outcome.

Game One

Still in the 5th, the Sox have blown this one open at 10-1…This is when you pick a bullpen guy and tell him have fun if you’re Clint Hurdle. Something to think about how many times have you seen a team score a bunch of runs and then go cold? Give you a hint ‘04 and about a week ago! On the flip side I have seen teams go hot, stay hot…

Beckett still looking very strong now in the bottom of the 5th inning, but everytime announcers start talking about guys being unhittable what happens? They start getting hit! But it looks like Dirty Water will be playing tonight at Fenway…

Bottom of the 4th and Sox up 4-1. Beckett looks solid, real solid. 7 K’s and he isn’t even throwing the hook yet! I think Rockie fans should start worrying, this has all the feel of ‘04 all over again.

ALCS

Well here it is game 7. Is anyone really surprised by this? Not if you had watched the games closely. The fact is Boston was hitting the ball hard, it just wasn’t falling in the right places. Then in game 5 you could see the Indians pressing, hoping not to go back to Boston. When the Red Sox hit the big inning in that game, the expressions on Cleveland’s faces said it all.

Now here it is. My thoughts is that I doubt Westbrook can repeat his game 4 performance. The only question for Boston is can Dice-K do what Drew did last night and finally earn the big paycheck…We shall see very soon.

Rockies

It is time to bring it up, the Rockies are no longer the underdog, they have to be the favorite. This is a team on a historic run, winning 21 of 22 games the last being a 6-4 win over the D-backs. The win gave Colorado a 4-0 NLCS sweep and sent them to the World Series. Folks this is amazing stuff here, something that has no answer as Todd Helton proclaimed on the post-game interview.

The Rockies are hot, hot as any team ever to enter the postseason. They swept the Phils 3-0 and now the D-Backs 4-0, so why would anyone pick against them? The answer is you can’t. Until this team shows some sign of slowing down, they have become the leader in the clubhouse.

On the other side of things the Indians now hold a 2-1 lead over Boston in the ALCS. This series is getting interesting in the fact that Cleveland is finding all the holes, while Boston is not. Take last night, Manny Ramirez hit a bullet that turned into a double play. It will be interesting to see if this holds or if like in ‘04 the Sox suddenly find the holes and bury the Tribe.

NLCS and ALCS

Well here we go MLB is down to its final four. The question who will make the fall classic? I have no idea!

The NLCS: It is tough to go against the Rockies in this one, but something tells me the law of averages is going to catch up to this team. Can they really continue playing this well? The answer is I doubt it, but if they play half as well, then Arizona is in trouble.

The D-backs are a solid team with one of the game’s best pitchers in Brandon Webb (18-10 3.01 ERA). Webb is the last pitcher to beat the Rockies on September 28 and should be given every chance to do it again, again and again.

The problem is manager Bob Melvin has eliminate one again and has decided to go with Micah Owens in game four; big mistake Bob!

Webb is the only advantage the D-backs have in this one. The Rockies are clearly the better offensive team with Todd Helton (.320 17 HR 91 RBI) and Matt Holiday (.340 36 HR 137 RBI), despite their struggles in the NLDS. You don’t have the guns to match the Rocks, Bob, so use what you do have and use it often; the NL’s best pitcher.

Instead of three starts, the sinkerballing Webb, who thrives on eating up innings, will get two starts. Unfortunatley for D-back fans I am betting that he gets only one start and the Rockies win this series 4-2 as Webb sits and watches.

USC No More

I should have known it would happen, USC went down in flames. The problem for the Trojans is simple, too many mistakes and turnovers. John David Booty looks to have gone backwards. It doesn’t matter if your entire 11 on defense will be in the NFL , when the offense sputs, spits and stalls, you are going to get beat at some point.

So what does this leave us? Well for starters Ohio State is in the drivers seat to return to the NC game. The Bucks are playing in an extremely weak Big 10 and have a real chance to finish undefeated. The problem; if they are perfect  they should be in the NC, but will they have really earned it?

I can’t believe the teams I see in the Top 10, South Florida, South Carolina, Missouri (almost) just to name a few. If there’s a positive, hopefully this will mean an end to the idiotic BCS system.

Fantasy Play ‘Em and Bench ‘Em

Play ‘Em:

Randy Moss- Let’s make this easy, until further notice play Randy Moss. The WR is nearly unstoppable and will tear apart the Browns, if the Pats decide to make it so.

Jay Cutler- The second year QB has been solid this year and should have a good game against the Chargers who are 27th against the pass. Don’t worry about the problems of Travis Henry, it only means Cutler will be asked to put up more numbers.

Tom Brady- He’s having a season for the record books. The best quarterback in the league is showing what he can do when he has a go-to WR.

Bench ‘Em:

Frank Gore- He and the Niners are sputtering and they play the Ravens. Sit him this week, but don’t give up on Gore. It is not uncommon to see backs break out in about week six.

Cedric Benson- If this guy is on your team, bench him and you should consider cutting him. Why the Bears thought he was ready to be a number one back is a mystery.

Phillip Rivers- The Chargers are bad, Rivers is struggling. Sit him down if you have another option, but watch him closely he could revive the season at any moment.
