Introducing The Oklahoma City Thunder…That’s right…Thunder

Oklahoma City has finally come up with a name for their new NBA franchise.  The franchise, itself, isn’t new-the former Seattle Supersonics, but now they have a new city, a new name, and possibly a new commotion from NBA fans.

Oklahoma City unveiled their new team name, The Oklahoma City Thunder.  If you think that sounds like an Arena football team name, your not alone.  Some NBA fans have even gone on record to state that the new team name sounds much like a team that would be featured in the WNBA.  That’s a pretty harsh analysis, yet one has to wonder how this will effect the marketing.

I recently posted about the Oklahoma City Thunder’s new uniforms and colors.  The black and white structure just doesn’t play to the “Thunder” name, but I guess I will just have to wait and see how this all comes together.  We all know that NBA team names and uniforms are not the basis for a successful team. That will only be measured in wins, something the previous Seattle Supersonics had a hard time doing

The Team Without A Name: Seattle Supersonics Become Oklahoma City ?

It has become official. Seattle has lost their NBA franchise to Oklahoma City. This news made the rounds a couple of weeks back, but until a team is officially wearing a uniform anything can happen. Oklahoma City is wearing the uniform..

Oklahoma City’s new NBA franchise recently premiered the ‘new’ look at a recent scrimmage during the Orlando summer league. The Orlando summer league pits many young pros and rookies against each other, giving them some much needed experience.

I have to say that the new image isn’t that bad. The jerseys are solid black with a white double-stripe down each side. Emblazend across the chest–Oklahoma City. These aren’t the official jerseys-the team hasn’t even been given it’s new nickname yet.

Speaking of nicknames–what should the old Supersonics be called? By the look of the jerseys, I am hoping that they aren’t going with the “Bombers”. That could be amusing and help heal some wounds, yet, you would have to think there might be some outrage in Oklahoma City..

Whatever the outcome, you can rest assured that new uniforms don’t make a team. Take their recent scrimmage with the Indiana Pacers. Given that this isn’t a ‘real’ game, it still had some public ramifications, if on jersey merit alone. They lost 95-78. The Pacers shut down any thought of a first game victory and probably made a few of them wish they were back in Seattle.

Seattle shouldn’t fret to much over losing the Supersonics. If this turns into anything like an NFL saga, Seattle could come back and host another team. *cough* Anyone remember the Houston Oilers? Or the Baltimore Colts? It could happen, but probably not any time soon.
