Cell phones are better used in the woods than on the roads. - Tails & Trails - Whitetail Deer & Turkey Hunting

Cell phones are better used in the woods than on the roads.

When ever I go hunting I always take a cell phone with me in my back pack. The main reason why is for safety purposes. If you ever get injured while you are out hunting you can call for help especially if you are like me and hunt alone.

They can also come in handy if god for bid something happens at home and your family needs to get in touch with you. Most cell phones these days have a option to put it on vibrate so if it does go off while your on stand it won’t scare off anything that might be standing near by.

Another reason is you you just shot a real nice buck and you can’t drag it out by yourself but, you can’t leave it there to go call for help. This way you can stay with your trophy while waiting for your buddies to come.

They are very inexpensive and most of them have good signal coverage especially in elevated areas. I personally have a pre-paid cell phone that works just fine. What I like about that type is that if I don’t want to use it then I just don’t put minutes on it but the best thing about them is that I don’t get another bill in the mail every month.

So really think about it at least for safety reasons.

I always carry a cellphone out in the woods. Not only is it great as a safety mechanism, but it is also my clock in the woods. I can set alarms for when legal hunting starts and ends. I know when to load or unload and walk out.

Two more aspects of the cell phone deserve mention, for those who have the capability: text messaging and pictures. Text messaging is an excellent way to communicate with your hunting partner without making a sound. “Seen any?”… “Heading to truck for hot coffee and soup”… The picture phone is great because you can carry a camera with you without adding bulk or weight to your pack. They’re also great for sending a picture to your partner that you got one.

Thanks for the comment and the added tips, you are so right. They can be used for all sorts of great reasons.

I think cellphones are often one of the most overlooked safety accessories a hunter can have. I’ve heard horror stories about hunters who had an accident and were stranded until someone came looking for them. A cellphone allows you to call for help immediately.

I carry a cell phone with me, too. Although, I don’t think I’d ever answer it while in the woods. It could save your life, though.

I always have mine with me and on vibrate. Makes me feel that much better knowing that I have it, especially if I’m hunting alone.

Kristine, you are so right. I honestly never really thought about it until a health issue came up. That is why I thought of that post because my wife kept telling me to take my cell phone when I left the house.

Arthur, definately I would put it on vibrate. It would just be my luck to have it start ringing when I have a huge whitetail walking in.

My prepaid cellphone hasn’t had service in the ravines on our property. Although it may not be to long until we won’t have any service outages because of all the towers that are being built in the neighborhood. I do consider it great tool in communication without making a lot of noise too.

Just don’t get caught playing games when that monster decides to sneak in on you!

    Great week of posting!

cdgarden, Thanks for the comment. It is always nice to have another tool in our arsenal. You never know.

Bryan, Thanks also for the comment. I know what you mean, on mine I can play poker. HeHeHe.

Last year I broke down and bought a prepaid one. I have one that I use on a daily basis but it has limited services when you get outside the cities. Another added benefit of the prepaid is that very few people have that number so I get very few interruptions while in the woods. That alone is worth the $50 a year I spend on it.
