Locating a Buck’s Bedroom - Tails & Trails - Whitetail Deer & Turkey Hunting

Locating a Buck’s Bedroom

To start buck’s will not usually bed with the doe’s, they like to be loners. Buck’s will usually bed in areas where they can have good visibility and still have the wind to their back with very dense cover close by for a easy escape if need be.

Some areas to keep in mind would be just below a ridge line, under conifer trees and on tall grassy slopes. Buck’s also like field edges just inside the wood line plus my favorite spot which is swamps, there they will hang on the edges where the alders and the brush our thick. One other place you might find them is in cornfields but not usually on windy days because there is to much movement for them to keep track of.

Once you find a deer bed you can determine if it is a buck’s bed by three basic clues and that would be 1) the bed is by itself and 2) it will smell real must and kind of rank, 3) it should be a large oval shape. One other thing they like to do is bed off of doe trails waiting for a receptive doe to come along but that is not usually till the rut.

When scouting for a buck’s bedroom it is wise to wear rubber boots and to keep as scent free as possible. When you have located what you think is a buck’s area you need to get out and stay out. Try to keep an eye on it but from a distance if possible, a good pair of binoculars will come in handy for that. Just remember that once located the more scent you leave in the area the more chance he will get nervous and leave.

A buck’s bedroom is his inner sanctum so if you are lucky enough to find it and not spoil the area than it will pay off in the end.

Good Luck & Happy Hunting, Rick
