More and more Towns are looking to control the Deer Populations

Danville Virginia is no different and this Newspaper write up just proves it. More and more I think we will be seeing news pieces like this. The Whitetail Deer is so adaptable to their surroundings that it does not matter how much area’s grow and change because the deer will change with them.

In my opinion we need to extend certain seasons and maybe even allow more tags to be given out to help control the deer herds. We also need to practice more QDM which means “Quality Deer Management”. Antlers are nice and I will be the first to say that but, harvest a few extra does once in awhile and you will gradually see a change in the deer populations.

Expansion of archery hunting approved

DANVILLE - In an effort to improve control of the deer population in the city, Danville City Council unanimously approved the expansion of archery deer hunting season in the city limits Tuesday night.

Danville will now allow archery deer hunting not only during the state’s urban archery seasons, but also during early archery season, late archery seasons and all firearms deer seasons.

What does this mean for hunters?

Effective immediately, according to City Attorney Clarke Whitfield Jr., bowhunters now can:

n hunt antlerless deer during the fall urban archery season from Sept. 15-Sept. 29;

n then switch to the rules of the various firearms deer seasons, and early and late archery seasons from Oct. 1 until Jan. 5, during which time they can hunt male or female deer; and

n then swing back to the rules of urban archery season and hunt antlerless deer from Jan. 7 - March 29.

This makes for an almost continual bowhunting season in the city from Sept. 15 through March 29. The deer do get to drop their guard on Jan. 6, when no season in the state allows bowhunting.

There are some additional rules for Danville bowhunters.

They must have written permission from the landowner to hunt on the property; can not shoot across streets, sidewalks, alleys, roads and other public places or toward a building; and they have to be firing from an elevated position at least 10 feet off the ground.

All laws about bag limits, necessary licenses, dog use and equipment remain in effect and should be checked as the seasons the city is observing change.

    Bryan, I agree. We should do everything we can to control the deer population so it is as balanced as humanly possible. Then we and our kids can enjoy whitetail deer for years to come and we won’t have to see them suffer from starvation.
