So you want to know more! - Tails & Trails - Whitetail Deer & Turkey Hunting

So you want to know more!

I was tagged with a meme from Bryan at deerPhD who got it from Kristine at the Outdoor Bloggers Summit blog so I will do my best to fulfill the requirements. I am suppose to tell you a little about myself outside of work. I can mention hunting but there is suppose to be more than that so this could be difficult because everything I do usually revolves around deer and deer hunting.

Hunting - Well I have been hunting deer for 17 years now and some say I am obsessed and totally hooked, I have to say they are probably right. I believe whole heartedly in hunting by 100% fair chase & 100% wild. I only hunt whitetail deer but care about all wildlife in general. I only harvest enough deer to help feed my family, in other words I don’t shoot what I can’t eat.

Family - I have been married for twenty two years and my wife’s name is Heidi. We have two boys named Adam and Tyler. We live in the northeast corner of Connecticut in a town called Ashford on a lake called Lake Chaffee. We have two cats and a dog. We try to do things as a family but our schedules never seem to work together as much as we would like. my older son works a lot so when he has a day off he disappears, typical for a twenty one year old I’m told. My wife Heidi has side jobs so she is in and out quite a bit. Our younger son Tyler is five so he keeps all of us hopping, I only wish I had half his energy. I know what your thinking, there is quite a span between ages for the two boys. A few breaks and a few “mishaps” in between can account for that but, we never gave up.

Here is a picture of Heidi, Tyler & Adam at Dinosaur Crossing in Montville, Connecticut. We had spent the day there walking trails and seeing lifesize sculptured Dinosaurs in natural habitat settings. It was a fun day for all of us, also a picture of our dog Sampson who protects the family when I am not home.

Sports - As far as participating in sports I was never really interested. I would have to say we like to watch Nascar racing on Sundays. Something about watching car go 200 mph around a oval track that gets the adrenalin pumping. We like to watch UCONN womens basketball as well. To watch the teamwork and determination that those girls have to be good at what they do is inspiration to all.

Reading - I would have to say I do tend to read quite often but it usually is about strategy and tactics for deer hunting as well as stories and technical articles for new equipment. ( told you I was obsessed)

* Quality Whitetails from QDMA

* Black Powder Guns and Hunting

* Northeast Big Buck News

Movies - Of course I love to watch hunting video’s but I do like to watch westerns so here are a few of my favorites,

* Wyatt Earp

* Open Range

* Broken Trail

* Outlaw Josey Wales

My outlook for the future - Everyone should have goals in life I feel that is what keeps us motivated so here is a short list of things I want to accomplish for the future.

* Spend as much time with my wife because she has the hardest job of all and teach my boys as much as I possibly can so they can be good at whatever they decide to do.

* My Dad died last year so I want to help my Mom as much as possible, it is the least I can do for everything she and dad had done for me through the years.

* I want to have a successful blog and make a lot more friends than I feel I already have since I been doing this.

* Do my part in Quality Deer Management by balancing the local deer herd every year.

* Getting my health straighten out so I can do the above mentioned.

According to the rules - I have to pass this along to three other bloggers by linking to them.

* Moose (Moose Droppings)

* John (Stabley Outdoors)

* Marshall (Desert Rat)

    Alright! Thanks for staying true to the meme. I didn’t know what one was either until I was tagged. I’ll have to put those movies on my ‘to watch’ list!

  2. Rick Says:

    Bryan, I guess we all learn something new everyday and I’m glad I wasn’t the only one. There are a lot of versions of Wyatt Earp but if you want my opinion the version with Kevin Costner is the best.

  3. Arthur Says:

    Great post Rick. It’s always good to find out a little more about someone. I think you are Whitetail obsessed, but that is a good thing:)

    What kind of dog is Sampson? Malamute? Husky?

  4. Kristine Shreve Says:

    Thanks for playing along. It is always nice to learn more about the people writing the blog.

  5. Rick Says:

    Arthur, Sampson is 1/2 Siberian Husky and 1/2 German Shepard. Plus thanks for the kind words.

    Kristine, I was more than happy to and I only hope I didn’t bore anyone or scare them off, LOL.

    [...] bit about themselves outside of their work and has to be more then just your hunting. Rick over at Tails & Trails tagged me so I’ll try to live up to the challenge but one thing that does bug me a bit is that [...]
