Keeping your Muzzleloader Barrel Condensation Free will only save you time on your next outing

Here is a helpful tip that I heard about and now I do myself. During muzzleloader season if you don’t happen to take a shot at the end of the day instead of blowing off the round you have in the barrel just leave it in but make sure you “REMOVE THE PRIMER CAP”.

When you get home either leave it in your vehicle or maybe garage or even the porch, just as long as you can lock it up. The reason being that as long as you don’t let the gun get cold than warm then cold again it won’t create condensation from warming inside and ruining the powder. That way you are already good to go the next day, all you would have to do is recap when you get to your stand.

Rick, I’ve found that works OK out here in CA, but it didn’t work at all in more humid climates like NC. In fact, the only thing I ever found to work in that miasma was a dessicant mix that you could put in your powder. It changed the volume of your measured load a little bit, but it did keep the moisture out of the powder.

I don’t know where, or even if, you can still get that stuff nowadays, but it did work.

Phillip, that is interesting. I never heard of that before. I found that here in the northeast as long as it is old you are ok, it is when it warms and get’s cold that the moisture sneaks up on ya.
