Squirrel Trapping and Control – Squirrels are small, desructive furry rodents who become a nuisance when they enter attics, soffits, and other areas of buildings.Squirrels are capable of causing damage through their gnawing activities, including creating a fire risk when they gnaw through the insulation on wires. Squirrels
also contaminate buildings with the shed hairs, urine, and droppings, and the parasites they carry can transmit many serious arboviral diseases. For more information please visit http://squirrelremovals.com.

Raccoon Trapping and Control – Raccoons are intelligent, medium-sized destructive mammals who frequently take up residence in attics, chimneys, sheds, barns, and other homes and buildings. Raccoons are stocky, powerful animals who can become aggressive and cause serious injury if approached. Raccoons also have a high incidence of rabies, and their parasites can vector many serious diseases. Raccoon control usually is accomplished by trapping and then having a professional
identify areas needed for animal damage repair and prevention. Raccoons will use separate areas in a attic as toilets and the fecal and urine matter can cause the spread of dangerous diseases such as raccoon roundworm and other diseases. For more info please visit http://raccoonremovals.com

Bat Control and Removal – Bats are beneficial mammals because they consume about 1000 insects an hour each during their nightly flights and up to 600o-8000 insects in one evening and basically eat their weight in insects with each nights flights. Bats become a nuisance when they nest in attics, barns, bell towers, soffits, and other parts of buildings. Their guano (droppings) contain disease-causing organisms, their parasites can transmit serious diseases, and the bats
themselves have a high incidence of rabies. Bat control is accomplished primarily by exclusion or the use of one way exit doors. The use of glueboards, mothballs are in many parts of the country illegal since many bats species are endangered and protected by the federal government and many local and state agencies. The trapping and use of nets with bats is illegal in some parts of the country because many get injured and can no longer fly. For more information on bats please visit
    http://batremovals.com

Skunk Control- Skunks (polecats) are medium-sized, primarily nocturnal animals whose diet consists mainly of insects and small rodents. as well as grasses, berries, and other plant products. They also are one of the few animals who eat honeybees. Although passive by nature, skunks will defend themselves with a foul-smelling spray that they can discharge with pinpoint if they feel threatened. This ability is the main reason why skunks are disliked. For more information visit http://skunkremovals.com

Attic Restoration Services – Many times when wildlife such as birds, bats ,raccoons and other species enter an attic they will leave large deposits of urine and fecal material in your attic. The insulation should be removed in affected areas, and the area cleaned up properly and the potential for disease to be transmitted to you, your family and pets is very important. Failure to have your attic cleaned up professionally can also affect the resale value of your home, property or structure. Anytime Animal Control Providing Wildlife Control Services To Madison, Wisconsin

    anytime

Anytime Animal Control can be reached by telephone 1-800-714-8727 or through their web site http://www.anytimeanimalcontrol.com

Anytime Animal Control removes nuisance wildlife in Madison with a delicate hand. Often using the animals natural movements against them, we are much more than trappers, we are wildlife professionals. Although we do trap urban wildlife from time to time, we use the most humane and effective methods.

Wildlife in Madison can cause illness in humans, cause flea infestations, physical damage to property, and become an immediate threat to the safety of you or your family. Skunks, raccoons, and coyotes are just a few species we typically work with on an every day basis. But we also handle bird control issues, stray cat colonies, squirrel control, and rat infestations. We rescue orphaned wildlife, and find qualified facilitators to rehabilitate and finish raising the animal. We get calls all the time from people with baby raccoons living in the attic, and they cause quite a racket at night. Most clients in such a case haven’t had much sleep in the past few days, and have a tired look about them. Our methods normally show resolution within 24 hours. Raccoons are mainly nocturnal animals, so humans and animals have conflicting schedules.

Mole and gopher control in Madison is a Gift from God to any landscaper or gardener. Without proper control of these burrowing pests, a lawn or garden can be completely destroyed on weeks. Our men and women in the area can eliminate the animals doing the damage. We will do it quickly and discretely.

Our Madison Office also repairs damages caused to your home by wildlife. This can be anything from patching a hole made by an animal in the roof, or removing and replacing the contaminated insulation in the attic after the animal issue itself has been resolved. Our representatives in have an intensive background in construction and home repair. We can even make the smell of a skunk go away so your neighbors wont be offended, and you wont even know it was there.

So if you have a need for wildlife control in Madison, look no further, Anytime Animal Control is there for you, and there is no job too big or small.

Book Review:Handbook For Wildlife Management Professional Company-Wildlife Control Podcast

On Thursday,Thomas Reilly and Mike Flick and I go together to talk about his new book and covered alot of material on writing company policy, company training programs, safety in our own industry and OSHA compliance and you will also find many useful forms for your own company in this book.

    handbook_tom

For more information on the book visit the author’s website or call Thomas direct at 508-835-6610.

    Listen to the podcast. http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-16456/TS-197111.mp3

Why did you right the book in the first place?

I actually started writing a handbook for my own company and something that another wildlife professional had said to me was stuck in my head,

He had said that if there was a generic wildlife company handbook available that he would buy it,,, and since there is a lot to putting together training materials and company policies and since this is basically a specialty industry I felt we needed some employee training material geared just for us.

Plus I had spent years writing and putting together safety training programs for the industry which due to certain events, never saw the light of day. I had been especially disappointed about this and I thought that at least some good could come of the work I done over the years, and if the people really weren’t interested, then they just wouldn’t buy it,
How is it different compared to other books in the industry?

Well the difference is that this is a company handbook and contains a lot of information, I mean a lot.

    Everything from sales,
talking to clients how to understand their perspectives and motivations.,
How to make money through add on services.

There is hands on material for training employee’s, like how to do a good inspection, how to deal with certain issues and species, the reasons why certain wildlife are present and how to offer more long term solutions at a greater profit and with a more professional finish

There is a great deal of information on regulations, ethics and creating company policy and creating safety policy’s and there are sample forms available, and about half the book is dedicated to workplace safety.

The only other industry related book I could compare it to would be Stevens wildlife damage handbook and the main difference is the volume of information verses the cost, in other words, you will spend more on this book, but you get a lot more information.

What can the reader expect to get out of your book?

A lot of viable information on developing company policy, a greater understanding of regulations that pertain to the residential marketplace and federal workplace safety standards as they would pertain to a professional wildlife management firm.

It will give the reader enough information so that they can develop their own polices to legally protect company assets, I mean come on now,,, the first thing any attorney asks for in discovery are company policies.

They will get a training tool for new hires and also get a permanent reference point when it comes to questions on workplace safety, once you read it and get an understanding of what the safety issues mean, legally, to a business and what your companies legal exposures are, then you will return to the book for reference.

And hopefully some folks will get the understanding that to run a business you need more than a trappers license, and hopefully maybe even teach an old dog a few new tricks

Can you tell me about your involvement in the Iron worker industry and how that experience has helped you become an expert in Safety in the wildlife control industry?

Sure, first of all I wasn’t an Iron worker, I was in the painters union in Boston for twenty years and I also did some residential construction and remodeling work.

For many years in the union I did mainly Steel maintenance work, that is sandblasting and epoxy coatings on bridges and towers, water tanks and so forth.

I also worked in power plants, nuclear plants, and water and sewage treatment plants, food processing, manufacturing plants and so on and large construction projects in downtown Boston.

Something happened when I was about 22 or 23 years old.
my foreman, who I had served my apprenticeship under fell to his death inside a water tower we were working on, it really shook me up at the time, after all he had taught me how to hang cable’s, swing stages on buildings, bow swains chairs, baskets, and so on, I mean he still called me “the kid’ , you know,,, But and it also really gave me a real rude introduction to federal workplace safety standards.

Because he wasn’t tied off and he knew better and all of the safety gear was on site, his widow received virtually nothing from workers compensation, there was a big lawsuit and the company was found not liable.

Over the years I saw a lot of guys get hurt, mainly from falls, a lot of broken ankles and wrists, a couple of guys with brain injuries and a lot of near misses.

At some point in time during the late 80’s and into the 90‘s, the local unions all started merging into one and the contractors we worked for, got together with the union organizers and formed a partnership in safety program, the union started requiring us to attend regular OSHA training sessions at the hall and started holding safety rallies were we eligible for prizes for safe hours worked.

Also any larger construction site you worked on and any plant you worked in started requiring attendance at site safety training before you could get on site.

All right so, the federal workplace safety standards are a good size piece of work, the code of federal safety regulations for the construction industry is 482 pages of regulatory speak and the general industry standards are 742 pages.

Now many regulations are different for say, a plumber or pipe fitter than they are for a carpenter or mason, regulations for a plant worker are different from residential construction is different then a home improvement guy or a pest control guy or someone who handles wildlife.

But many workplace safety regulations are the same for everyone, like fall protection standards or the ladder & stairwell or the respiratory standards,

BUT some also pertain in different ways to different trades.

So, back to me, I had documented over a hundred hours of OSHA training and maybe lots more I had lost paperwork on, so after I had been running a business for a few years, and started getting involved in this industry.

I took my paperwork to OSHA and received a week long instructors training course.

I received an OSHA outreach instructors authorization, which allows me to teach and certify in 10 hour and 30 hour OSHA outreach classes, but more importantly it gave me a greater understanding of the federal code of regulations, which gave me the knowledge I needed to pull out the regulations that pertain to this industry and put them into layman’s terms, which is the outreach instructors main objective.

The biggest hurdle I have found in this industry is not the need for safety training, but making business owners understand that there is a federal law that requires all workers be trained in known workplace hazards.

In this book, I managed to get any possible known hazards as defined by OSHA that affect this industry, in print, understandable to the reader and included training material for them.

Can you please tell us about your own wildlife control business?

Sure, I started in 99 running a trapping business, I started doing bat work and pulling critters out of chimneys, after a few years, the competition started to get fierce and I also realized there was a lot more money to be made, In 2003 I started doing pest control and
small repairs for people and also organized as a type S corporation and started hiring and training my own employees.
A couple years ago I hired a chimney technician and I taught him wildlife and pest management and he taught me about chimneys, today we offer a variety of services including rebuilding, Re-pointing and relining chimneys as well as the caps, and I do a lot of repair work, from pest damage, I even bought a handbrake after seeing Rick Shadel’s class and do some aluminum repairs as well.

Now if the economy would only pick back up!

Snakes & Fears … -Snake Control – Oklahoma- Texas

    Snakes & Fears,
    by Reginald Murray ,Tulsa, Oklahoma

As spring draws near, or as it happens in Oklahoma and Texas … winter never really comes … we will start to see more and more activity from our cold blooded friends … the reptiles.

Snakes in particular are occasionally misidentified due in part to the “phobias” many people harbor towards them with the “Old Way” thinking that any good snake is a dead snake. This is absolutely not the case.
