Wpn Celebrating Three Years:”Connecting The Consumer With The Wildlife Control Industry”

    Wpn Celebrating Three Years

    trapper_robb_logo_2

It is hard to believe with this past Sep 7th just passing WpN is now three year years old.

For the naysayers, we have not ever formed a new trade association and still back our one and only trade association, NWCOA and are proud to be one of their vendor members today.

It is hard to believe that what started out as five guys wanting to share their tips and tricks with other NWCO’s into the 563 members, 165 podcasts and over 200 videos online we have today and have done it without ever charging any member access to our site and have no plans to ever do it either.

Overtime we have evolved into a network of members who are also avid hunters and fur trappers, beekeeping enthusiasts and but have always stuck to one central theme of connecting the wildlife control industry together. There are many who may argue the fit with beekeeping but so many of us do bee cut outs and live bee removals today because of our involvement beekeeping has become a strong interest area to large part of our membership.

Our current business model is to take this all to the next highest level and promote each of these industries and the people behind each of them and will begin “Connecting The Consumer Better With Our Own Industry” with a commitment to educating the public and our own members alike.

We are holding a podcast Sunday Night for all of our NWCO’s to discuss and share ideas on how to make a NWCO’s business stay solvent over a long cold, snowy winter in the deep snow up north.

The next consecutive 50 Thursdays with the exception of each 2nd Tuesday of each Month (WpN Beekeepers Night) we will be interviewing NWCO’s in each state that advertise with WpN with the state of NY this next Thursday. Still time to signup and be part of that podcast.Call and ask Robb how!

Our phone numbers have changed! Some of our web sites have changed but our commitment to promote all of you has never changed and many of you will be amazed at the changes going behind the scenes daily to not only stay competitive but be become the leading web sites about our industry.

    On oct 1st our new monthly Ezine will be part of the content at “WildlifeControl-USA.COM”and will be how we show case our industry in a positive light to the consumer and of course be linked to all of our state and local directories.;

We don’t build you a page but actually build you a web site within our site and give your business all the tools locally to grow on the internet on your own.For those who belong to the directory we do offer free web site hosting and your own personal FTP access to build your own site and connect it to our directory and a win win for those struggling to make every dollar count. Don’t want to build it yourself, ask me to build your site for you or even just just do the SEO work on your site to get the search engine rankings you need to compete as a NWCO in this new digital age.

Any questions or concerns please feel free to call me.

Live Trapping Of Bees Is Earth Friendly. No Pesticides Ever used.

Now don’t be scared off by the term “podcast”. You don’t need to download/install/configure anything on your computer to participate. In fact, you don’t even need your computer. An ordinary phone is all that is needed (of course you can use your computer if you elect to do so). The Wildlife Pro Network plans on regularly holding a monthly Beekeepers Podcast every 2nd Tuesday of each Month.

Just call (724) 444-7444 and use call id – 16456# It is that simple. Use 1# as a pin number. You can also listen in to the show using a computer at http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/talkCast.jsp?masterId=16456&cmd=tc

We will have some experienced bee removers to kick it off, but the direction of the discussion will go however the participants lead it. So come with your topics (beekeeping related of course).Members from two popular beekeeping forums,http://forum.beemaster.com and http://www.beekeepingforums.com

Bob Evans, who will be hosting, is a Nationally Certified Wildlife Control Professional and is a full time nuisance wildlife control operator doing business as Live Trapping by Matt. Bob has been keeping bees about 20 years and covers all of New York State for bee removals. Bob is also a pro at these podcasts and has a wealth of knowledge to share.

Bob Evans services Oneida, Rome , Syracuse and surrounding areas of New York!

Steve Prince, who is from Georgia and captures more swarms in a give year than the majority of us capture in a lifetime, combined!

I am a 2nd generation beekeeper with 30 years experience. The last 5 years I have been focusing on feral stock, and operate a part-time bee removal business in the Catskill Mountains and surrounding areas under Bushkill Apiary.

I was hoping to get a few more removal experts to participate. Unfortunately , due to hearing issues, Iddee(Walter Swaim) needs to stick with text based correspondence, and I could not confirm participation from the others as it is getting into the busy season.

The BushKill Bee Vacuum For Live Bee Removals

Rob Overton of Bushkill Farms and a member of The Wildlife Pro Network has been  been doing quite a bit of bee removals for a few years now and heavily rely on using a bee vac. Rob was never quite pleased with the traditional box in a box design, so a couple of years ago I designed my own. It is basically a top and a bottom that is used with a regular hive body. The concept is to suck them right into the hive and not have to move them again, which reduces the stress and killing of more bees. It stores compactly and can either be used with a separate vac or an integrated one and is easily expandable for those huge swarms. Quite a few other beekeepers have built them as well and have had good success.

Mystery Solved for Honey Bee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)?

Mystery Solved for Honey Bee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)?
    Robb Russell, Gainesville, Florida

Live Trapping Of Bees Is Earth Friendly. No Pesticides Ever used.

Live Trapping Of Bees Is Earth Friendly. No Pesticides Ever used.

Great news came out of Spain this week that if correct may finally solve the mystery surrounding the disappearance of domesticated honey bees throughout the United States. Honey bees are a very significant contributor to most of all farmed goods in the United States since we rely on them to pollinate the crops harvested to feed this great nation.

Up until now this discovery and link to a parasite found in professional apiaries called Nosema ceranae (Microsporidia) the beekeepers and scientists have been fooled about its origin. As a fellow bee keeper I have long been concerned of whether or not we would ever have a cure for CCD.

Thanks to the efforts of a Spanish science team they have now isolated the parasite and were successful in eliminating this parasite. They were successful in treating the infected surviving under-populated colonies with the antibiotic drug, flumagillin and demonstrated complete recovery of all infected colonies.

For more info please READ THE ARTICLE

If you have a problem with bees swarming and want to have them removed . I personally recommend not hiring a pest control company that uses chemicals since we still have low populations of bees throughout the United States. Hire a beekeeper or a professional company that offers live bee removal. The professionals are trained to not only to resolve your Human-Bee Conflict but safely return the bees back to the environment using approved green methods. You can find Beekeepers and live honey bee trappers through our many web sites: wildlifecontrol.tv , honeybeeremovals.com and anytime animal control.

For those in North Central Florida I am always available for both consultation and removal of honey bees in Alachua, Baker, Columbia, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Madison, Marion, Suwanee and Union counties. Some of these cities and towns but not all of them are: Lake City, Fort White, Watertown, Five Points, Lake Butler, Raiford, Worthington Springs,Glen St. Mary, Macclenny, Alachua, Archer, Gainesville,Hawthorne, High Springs, LaCrosse, Micanopy, Newberry, Waldo, Jonesville, Haile Plantation, Bell, Fanning Springs, Trenton,Jasper, Jennings, White Springs,Branford, Live Oak, O’Brien, McAlpin, Wellborn, Mayo.

Bed Bugs: My Experiences With The Bugs From Hell

Bed bugs are on the rise across the USA. If you are a traveler, BEWARE!

The Bed Bug: The Guest From Hell!!

The Bed Bug: The Guest From Hell!!

Bedbugs are a nightmare and in many parts of the country have already developed an immunity to pyrethroids. I have done several motel rooms in the past and can tell you although this is a high dollar service it all comes down to being very detailed in your inspection and treatment. For example, the average motel room requires 3-4 hours of inspection and treatment.

Bed Bugs Along The Crevices Of A Bed Mattress

Bed Bugs Along The Crevices Of A Bed Mattress

Steamed heat works best in areas you can get away with it. Steam cleaning carpets, (especially carpet corners and edges) about every crack and crevices you can think of. Removing pictures off the wall, putting mattress covers on every “new” mattress and dismantling every piece of furniture and doing 100% coverage and treating every crevice and I mean every crevice. Neglect one area and the whole invasion thing just takes off like you never treated the place.

The adult bedbug is known to be able to go for over 6 months without feeding, and when deprived of food may live for a year and a half.(this means bring a living human host in 1/1/2 years and suddenly they found a blood meal). Eggs are deposited into hidden crevices by the female, and normally hatch within about 1 week. But, in cooler temperatures this may take a month of more.

    Bed Bugs Along A face

    Bed Bugs Along A Face

As far as chemicals I have used Phantom, or a Eco Smart Botanical . Pesticides work very poorly on the eggs and that means physically removing every egg. Mattresses, pillows, upholstered furniture are thrown away and replaced with covers and made of Steri-Fab and vinyl upholstery (easier to treat next time); Replacing carpeted floors with tile will keep the maintenance costs down next time their is a re-infestation. Fumigating a home or building may not even kill all the eggs.

As far as equipment Tyvek suits, taped close, gloves. A tool box that includes every possible screw driver, torx, you name it; box wrenches, socket set and at least a two man team since the job involves flipping over every piece of furniture and doing detailed work.

This work is very labor intensive. Customers want guarantees and you to return for re-occurrences which can be something as simple as last nights guest bringing them with them from the nights stay at another motel. If you are thinking of doing this as a business, think it over, lots of re-inspections and follow-ups to stay ahead of the problems.

If its a home, just about every upholstered furniture can be suspect especially if someone moved from the bed to the couch to sleep because they could not handle the bed bugs in the bedroom. We got out of the bed bug business when we realized it involved dedicated crews ;but we basically did motels that were a revolving door for re-infestation. Homes on the other hand were profitable if they agreed to replacing all upholstered furniture and not stay in motels and thoroughly inspect items from guests who stayed in a motel on the way to Florida.

DDT fixed this once and now in the days of IPM and less use of pesticides as a industry this has caused a resurgence of bed bugs.

A Gainesville -Live Oak Florida Raccoon Bite Story

Note: I am sharing this story as a reminder to never try to pick up a wild animal no matter how good intentioned you may be. Wild animals should be left alone and no one can really determine by a visual inspection that a animal may have rabies or other diseases.

On Saturday, March 14th,2009 I got a call from my son’s best friend’s mom that  her husband found a raccoon down the street. She was all teary eyed  over the phone and on her way to pick up her husband who was at work and needing to come home because he became sick and that he refused to get medical help and she asked me to step in and try to help the situation.

Robb Russell, Fort White, Florida Using A Control Pole To Handle the Rabies Suspect Raccoon

So I made the phone call to their local health department in Suwanee County, Florida  who obviously wanted me to go bring them the coon. Did I forget to mention, they kept it in a outside bathroom and it was tearing the bathroom up.

The coon turned out to be a young juvenile and the bite broke his skin on his right forearm and looked to be healing well, no redness, no swelling and thankfully a good clean looking wound healing well. But good looking or not since rabies runs through saliva and not the blood stream it was necessary to have the coon protected and determine whether the coon had rabies and whether rabies treatment needed to be initiated right away.

So I went over poled the coon, shot it per instructions from the health department  and took it to the lab for a necropsy and filled out the incident report with the health department .

The lab results were shipped  via FedEx to the state lab in Jacksonville , Florida and thankfully 48 hours later we were all relieved to learn the coon did not have rabies.

The dad, promised he would think twice next time but not really sure if he learned anything today but at least I got the animal tested.

What To Do If Bitten By Any Animal

If you have been bitten or scratched by an animal that might
    be rabid, do the following:

    • Act promptly, but do not panic. It takes time for the rabies
virus to react in the body.

    • Capture and kill the suspect animal, if possible, without
    destroying the head.

    • Wash the wound immediately and thoroughly with generous
amounts of soap and water. Then apply rubbing alcohol or
a strong solution of water and iodine to the exposed areas
(except for the eyes, of course).

    • Contact a physician immediately after this first-aid treatment.
Rabies vaccine and antiserum will then be administered as
    required.
