New Blog on Wildlife Diseases-Rabies,Tetanus ,Tularemia by Jerry Genesio

Earlier this month I posted a mention of Author of “UNSEEN HAZARDS That Threaten Hunters, Campers, and Hikers: What you should know about pathogens commonly found in wildlife.”

Well Jerry has started a blog and I will want to make many of you aware of it. You can find it at http://naturalunseenhazards.wordpress.com/

Here is a excerpt from my interview on July 3rd, 2009 on Rabies. You can listen to the whole interview at http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/audioPop.jsp?episodeId=240358&cmd=apop

Rabies Survivor Teams Up With Parents Of Rabies Victim To Raise Awareness
    July 28, 2009 ·

Last month Alex Sanz, a reporter with KHOU-TV’s 11 News in Houston, Texas, filed a story about the parents of Zach Jones, a 16-year-old Humble High sophomore who died of rabies in 2006. Zach’s parents, Connie and Larry Jones, have broken their silence and in their first interview since this son’s death told 11 News they don’t want other children to suffer as their son did.

Zach was napping when a bat flew through an open window into his bedroom. Something disturbed his sleep because he awoke and brushed the bat off, telling his parents later that it had not bitten him. Five weeks later Zach’s mother said her son was sleeping more than usual, and coughing, but she attributed his symptoms to spring allergies. Then he complained that his mind didn’t feel right, but he couldn’t explain it further. The following week Zach was dead.

Teaming up with Jeanna Giese, 19, of Wisconsin, Connie and Larry Jones have launched a campaign to raise rabies awareness. In 2004, Jeanna was the first person in the world known to have survived rabies without having received a pre- or post-exposure prophylaxis rabies vaccination. Only five others are known to have survived rabies after symptoms have appeared but all had either been vaccinated prior to exposure, or received vaccine soon thereafter, and all but one of these still has persistent neurological difficulties, particularly with body movement.

Squirrel Trapping and Control – Squirrels are small, desructive furry rodents who become a nuisance when they enter attics, soffits, and other areas of buildings.Squirrels are capable of causing damage through their gnawing activities, including creating a fire risk when they gnaw through the insulation on wires. Squirrels
also contaminate buildings with the shed hairs, urine, and droppings, and the parasites they carry can transmit many serious arboviral diseases. For more information please visit http://squirrelremovals.com.

Raccoon Trapping and Control – Raccoons are intelligent, medium-sized destructive mammals who frequently take up residence in attics, chimneys, sheds, barns, and other homes and buildings. Raccoons are stocky, powerful animals who can become aggressive and cause serious injury if approached. Raccoons also have a high incidence of rabies, and their parasites can vector many serious diseases. Raccoon control usually is accomplished by trapping and then having a professional
identify areas needed for animal damage repair and prevention. Raccoons will use separate areas in a attic as toilets and the fecal and urine matter can cause the spread of dangerous diseases such as raccoon roundworm and other diseases. For more info please visit http://raccoonremovals.com

Bat Control and Removal – Bats are beneficial mammals because they consume about 1000 insects an hour each during their nightly flights and up to 600o-8000 insects in one evening and basically eat their weight in insects with each nights flights. Bats become a nuisance when they nest in attics, barns, bell towers, soffits, and other parts of buildings. Their guano (droppings) contain disease-causing organisms, their parasites can transmit serious diseases, and the bats
themselves have a high incidence of rabies. Bat control is accomplished primarily by exclusion or the use of one way exit doors. The use of glueboards, mothballs are in many parts of the country illegal since many bats species are endangered and protected by the federal government and many local and state agencies. The trapping and use of nets with bats is illegal in some parts of the country because many get injured and can no longer fly. For more information on bats please visit
    http://batremovals.com

Skunk Control- Skunks (polecats) are medium-sized, primarily nocturnal animals whose diet consists mainly of insects and small rodents. as well as grasses, berries, and other plant products. They also are one of the few animals who eat honeybees. Although passive by nature, skunks will defend themselves with a foul-smelling spray that they can discharge with pinpoint if they feel threatened. This ability is the main reason why skunks are disliked. For more information visit http://skunkremovals.com

Attic Restoration Services – Many times when wildlife such as birds, bats ,raccoons and other species enter an attic they will leave large deposits of urine and fecal material in your attic. The insulation should be removed in affected areas, and the area cleaned up properly and the potential for disease to be transmitted to you, your family and pets is very important. Failure to have your attic cleaned up professionally can also affect the resale value of your home, property or structure. Wildlife Operator’s White Nose Syndrome (WNS) Task Force

The wildlife control industry through a network of wildlife control operators volunteers has formed a Wildlife Operators White Nose Syndrome (WNS) Task Force to work with the scientific community on the collection of nuisance roost data.

Our nations bat population is very important to our eco system . The wildlife control industry can be counted on to do our part in helping solve the mystery and provide whatever man power and data needed to help the scientific community on their White Nose Syndrome and any other wildlife research projects in the future.

The Task Force consists of the National Coordinator, Craig Coon, a private nuisance wildlife control business owner based in Saratoga Springs, New York. Mr Coon has diligently been communicating with the USFS, NYDEC, other state agencies, universities and conservation groups. He is actively seeking volunteers within the nuisance wildlife control community to volunteer as State Coordinators (many have already been set up), individual volunteers from any state can help in the collection of nuisance roost data and are encouraged to contact Mr. Coon at 518-584-5201.

The task force has can be found online at http://www.wildlifepro.net/group/wnstaskforce and any member of the nuisance wildlife control community is encouraged to join and take part in this worthy effort. As an update, many bat species have already been depleted in the states of New York and Vermont, with similar expectations in New Jersey. White nose syndrome has been identified and observed in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Vermont and Virginia and predicted to affect the Midwest states of Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. Al Hicks of the NY DEC, has been quoted “WNS coming to a cave near you soon”.

A video of the first WNS Seminar with the Scientific Community and the wildlife control industry can be viewed in three parts at http://wildlifecontrol.tv/wns-white-nose-syndrome-symposium-video.html

Those interested in getting involved with the Nuisance wildlife control communities efforts can contact Mr Coon directly and send a message and their contact information to:

    Bird Control

Three species of birds are considered pests and may be controlled at will: Pigeons, starlings, and sparrows. Other species, such as geese, are considered “nuisance wildlife” and may be controlled using different methods, when necessary. Birds become pests when they exist in great numbers where they are not desired, when they cause damage or defacement to buildings or statuary, when their droppings create a health hazard around human-occupied areas, when they clog the air intakes to home or industrial ventilation systems, or when they create a hazard to air navigation such as colliding with manned commercial or military aircraft.

Pigeons cause defacement and accelerated building deterioration, fouling and soiling, noise and nuisance, poor public appearance & image, health hazards, transmission of disease, contamination of water / food supplies, public / employee safety and equipment damage. Cost of bird strikes and delays / cancellations to the commercial and military aviation industry is estimated to be $1.0 billion to $1.5 billion dollars a year. Monetary losses and damages caused by pigeon and bird feces to businesses, transportation entities, utilities and the general public goes largely unreported costing consumers untold multi-millions of dollars each year.

Do pigeons pose a health risk? YES. Aside from the parasites & mites, they will provide you with …
    Histoplasmosis

Starlings are very aggressive and will drive native birds out of its territory, much to the dismay of local bird watchers. Starlings are well noted for their flocking habits. They often gather in the tens of thousands, creating a huge nuisance when roosting in populated areas. Starlings are a major nuisance in urban areas due to their nesting, eating and living habits. When the bird is in its flocking phase, thousands of starlings often overwhelm urban buildings.

House Sparrows droppings and feathers create janitorial problems as well as hazardous, unsanitary, and odoriferous situations inside and outside of buildings and sidewalks under roosting areas.

UNSEEN HAZARDS THAT THREATEN HUNTERS, CAMPERS, AND HIKERS

Thursday Night on Our Podcast at 8 PM EST I will be joined by author, Jerry Genesio will be joining me for a discussion on wildlife diseases that threaten campers, hunters, campers, wildlife and animal control professionals.

You can join us by dialing in at 1-724-444-7444 call id 16456#, and use 1# as your pin number. The podcast will available for download upon the conclusion of the podcast at http://skinnymoose.com/wildlifepro/our-podcasts/ along with all of our network podcasts.

Bridgton, Maine, June 25, 2009 – There are UNSEEN HAZARDS in forests and fields that threaten those who enjoy hunting, camping, and hiking. Pathogens commonly found in wildlife can inflict unspeakable suffering and even death. Rabies, Tetanus (Lockjaw), Tularemia (Rabbit Fever), Brusellosis (Undulant Fever), Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Borrelia (Lyme Disease), are six of the most virulent microorganisms lurking in nature’s hidden world patiently waiting for an opportunity to infect the unsuspecting and unprepared. But knowledge and simple protective measures can shield even the most vulnerable.

Jerry Genesio has written an 86-page book containing vital information about these perilous pathogens. Each is described with symptoms, treatment, history, carriers, geographical risk areas, and significant incidence reports. The book also contains advice provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA, on how to avoid vectors such as ticks, and how to properly remove ticks.

In 1993, Rabies was confirmed in 20 deer in the state of New York. Tetanus is commonly found in the intestines of wild animals. About 200 cases of Rabbit Fever are reported in the U.S. annually. There are 100 to 200 human cases of Undulant Fever reported nationally each year with most reports originating in Texas, California, and Illinois. In 2003 and 2004, more than 1,800 cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever were reported each year, but less than 2% of all cases are actually found in the Rocky Mountain states. Of 27,444 cases of Lyme Disease reported in 2007, 87% were confined to 10 states, including Connecticut and Wisconsin.

UNSEEN HAZARDS That Threaten Hunters, Campers, and Hikers: What you should know about pathogens commonly found in wildlife, ISBN 978-1448605118, is available for $7.95 plus shipping and handling. It can be ordered online through Amazon.com, Amazon’s Kindle Store ($4.95), or at https://www.createspace.com/3387093 . Also see featured books on www.besthike.com and www.rodnrifle.com.

Jerry Genesio was employed by Cutter Laboratories in their Biological Products Division for nearly 20 years. He has written and published numerous articles, including a natural history series focusing on zoonotic diseases that was featured in New England Outdoors magazine. He lives in Bridgton, Maine, and Wilmington, North Carolina.

What’s The Big Deal About Attic Cleanups and Restoration

What’s The Big Deal About Attic Cleanups and Restoration.
Article Written by Robb Russell, for Findthewildlifepro.com

One of the biggest decisions home and building owners ask themselves is why is it important to have an attic restoration done after having wildlife removed from their attic.

Many quickly rationalize with ” I don’t use it “, or ” I will stop using it! ” and oh ” its just an attic! “

The fact is two very important factors come into play and can not be ignored.

    (1) The value and resale of your home or building.

Wildlife control operators across the country everyday get calls after a home inspection to close on their home or because of strange smells in the home occupants are unaware of that a real estate agent says must be fixed before the home will ever sale. Recently, in Mankato, Minnesota a elderly couple were thinking about selling thier home and going into an assisted care facilty. The realtor walked into the home and quickly picked up on a foul odor. Upon questioning they said they knew bats inhabited the attic for years and just don’t use the upstairs of their home anymore. Upon inspection of the upstairs urine actually bat guano stains covered all the upstairs celings was not only unsightly but was rank in odor and the home unsellable.

A local wildlife control company was sent in to inspect and found a large colony estimated in excess of over 1000 bats occupied the attic and with protective equipment peeked into the attic and found over 1 foot depths of bat guano or fecal waste all over the attic floor. The wildlife control operator and was able to get the cleanup done for the cost of the homes deductable from thier homeowners policy and all the bats were removed and months later the home sold for above market value.

    (2) The health of your family and any workers hired into an attic to fix plumbing, air, heat, electric ,cable, phone and other professionals.

Bats and birds waste is dangerous. When dried it becomes a airborne hazard not olnly to workers but can actually flow into the living space of your home and can cause illness or even death. The most common disease is histoplasmosis which cause at first long term , unexplainable flu like effects for months and need to be corrected by antibiotics and have the entire building or home cleaned up. For more on histoplasmosis click here.

Bats and birds can be quite dangerous. There are two specific health hazards that are associated with bats, Rabies and Histoplasmosis. Please visit the Center For Disease Control.
